AKAR Rally organisers have decided to cancel Stage 9 of the event on safety grounds.

The ninth stage of the event was set to comprise a 755km trek from Tupiza in Bolivia to Salta in Argentina, including a 242km competitive section.

Heavy rains have impacted the rally since it arrived in Bolivia late last week, with the weather turning areas of the overnight bivouac at Tupiza to mud.

It`s all to do with not being able to get choppers and rescue people in. The cloud cover is so dense they cannot get the choppers in.

I believe it was last year. The organisers used some of the equipment to help with the rescue.

yeah I vaguely remember some of the Dakar people helped somehow, but couldn't remember what they did.

It is great to see the cars are still trying even if the gaps are quite big. All going at it for bragging rights I reckon.

The Peugeot's seem to have the measure of the Toyota's. The Hilux boys are getting the odd stage win but just can quite keep it together.

I notice the Peugeot with their 37" tyres that it is quite an open pattern, more like a mud terrain, as opposed to the 4WD vehicles which is more an AT pattern. Don't know why, just stating my observation.

SBS have the usual 26 minute show each night starting tomorrow (Tuesday).

With a couple of Aussies on the bikes and and one in a Holden Ute in the cars it will be fantastic to watch.

The start podium/introductions has been completed so one last sleep before the competitors are thrown into the desert.

not sure why they arent in a buggy class. Be fascinating to see how pretty much production cars with shocks, tyres and a cage in them would go. Same in the aussie safari or what ever it is called these days.

The T2 category is the closest there is to a production model. This is usually dominated by the Toyota Landcruiser.

The Holden ute is in the T1 catagory which is a highly modified class for pure desert racing machines.

Toby Price remains fifth overall but has lost more than 10 minutes to the lead after the KTM rider was one of several to get lost.

Price was nearly 20 minutes down on stage leader and eventual winner Xavier de Soultrait at Waypoint 5 and while he made inroads on the Frenchman, he couldn’t find any more time relative to the man who now leads the event, Pablo Quintanilla.

Just came across this thread.
Haven't thought about the Dakar Rally for waayy tooo many years - so not intent to hijack the thread.
However, can anyone remember the the  late 80's early 90's when the Pajero "beasts" (nothing like the market Pajeros) were flying across the north African deserts?
I remember sitting in awe at the( then) Pajero development vehicles outrunning the helicopters with ridiculous speeds and "floating from dune to dune" at insane speeds.
If anyone has a link to a video or similar from that time can you PLEEEEASE  post it up!
I'm sure many would love to see the old magic period again  .

The same cars came out for the as it was then - Wynns Safari the year I was there... We saw one roll over and 2 people roll it back on wheels, fired straight up - and pissed off in a hurry up in OB Qld!... like modern Dakar rigs - nothing to do with the showroom cars. they also had a different sound to them compared to all other Paj's that year.

Just came across this on another site.

Hi all Aussie Holden Ute followers. It is with regret that the battlers from down under have withdrawn from Dakar 2019! Early in the competitive stage today, Steve and Trev nosed the car over a sand dune which has resulted in Steve being airlifted to Lima, and Trev although sore, is in good spirits considering the impact. When we know more we will keep you all up to date. Thanks for all your support and well wishes! Cheers from the Team!
