More quakes in Christchurch :(
« on: December 23, 2011, 11:32:07 AM »
What a **** thing to happen at xmas..:(

Quote
Website Geonet reported that quake struck about 20 kilometres north-east of Lyttleton at a depth of about 8km and a magnitude of 5.8.

A large earthquake has hit Christchurch.

The quake struck at 1.58pm, local time, and was followed by a second sharp jolt a few minutes later. Several other aftershocks have also been recorded.

The Christchurch Airport has been evacuated and the Fire Service deployed.

Fairfax reporter Hamish Rutherford, who was at the airport, said the alarms had gone off, people had left the building, and were now waiting outside. He said people kept calm while the building rocked from side to side during the strong quake, which lasted about 20 seconds.

A visitor to the city said Westfield Mall was being evacuated. Terrified shoppers stumbled and fell as they fled the mall and items tumbled off shelves.

Phone lines are down.

Nature has no calender Lost ... but yes ... not good for the people in the area, who seemed to have suffered a bit too much from tremors this year.  I'm guessing they will be having after shocks for a few days too.  A friends family live in the area and had damage but no loss of life from the big one a little while back.  I'll be keeping an eye on what happens for her sake.  In general people are fairly resilient, but the loss of life can be heartbraking for all of us.

I believe there is a website that shows you all of the tremors around the particular fault lines, and there are alot more than is reported on the news.  Did have a link to it, but had to wipe the hard-drive a little while ago, so don't have it anymore.  The "map" marked large, small, and gave a (sort of) timeline for tremors.  Was very interesting.

My father inlaw's sister lives in Christchurch.

he was on the phone earlier to her today to make sure she was all right and they had another two tremors while he was on the phone to her. one was 5.8 and the oth was in the 6's.

in the big one earlier this year they basically lost their house as it was unsafe to live in.

hope our Kiwi cousin's get a break soon.

cheers, Chris

As one of our pollies commented after the big Christchurch quake, "Kiwis are family".
And they are. And they deserve better than this. God bless 'em.
Cheers, Tony

Just also got off Skype to my daughter in ChCh. They have new cracks in the house and the little ones are crying and scared. What a great Xmas for her and my 4 Grand kids - Not. I can't believe that beautiful city is a wreck, it will never be the same as I remember it growing up and even though I left at 14 I used to love going back. Not sure I will now for a while.

Very sad for all.

Damaging' quake rocks Christchurch

A "damaging" aftershock has shaken Christchurch.

Geonet rapid is reporting the quake as a magnitude 5.2, at a depth of 10 km and located 20 kilometres east of Christchurch.

It has described the intensity of the south New Brighton quake as "damaging".

It was felt strongly across Christchurch with Twitter users commenting on shoppers running out of Eastgate Mall.

Another commented that the earthquake lasted for more than 10 seconds and it caused the building they were in to rock back and forth.

2 quakes...

Quote
Christchurch has again been shaken by earthquakes, with two "damaging" tremors hitting the city within four minutes of each other this afternoon.

Geonet rapid said the the magnitude 5.2 earthquake, centred 10km east of Christchurch and 11km underground, struck at 2.44pm local time (12.44pm AEST).

It was followed four minutes later by a magnitude 3.6 quake, at a depth of 20km and centred 5km north east of Christchurch.

The city's "red zone" - the area most extensively damaged by the September 2010 quake, was shut down as a precaution after the quake hit.

---

It's months since Christchurch has had a quake registering above magnitude 5. On January 15, a magnitude 5.1 quakestruck off the New Brighton coast.

Today's shake was the 41st quake greater than magnitude 5 since the destructive September 4, 2010, earthquake which levelled much of the city and left hundreds of casualties

2 more big quakes in Unzud.
What did they do to deserve this

Two strong earthquakes, one measuring 6.6 and then a 5.7,  hit central New Zealand on Friday afternoon, sending Wellington commuters fleeing from the city and causing  havoc in Marlborough.

It's all the fault of France, their nuclear tests in the South Pacific and the sinking of the rainbow warrior,

You can't tell me all those South Pacific test  doesn't upset the earths crust, and if its so safe then why don't the frogs do it in their own back yard

My sister lives just north of Wellington and said it was bad. Said her house was shaking sideways. Yet my mums house is on a slab and moves in circles in a quake. Nothing falls down. Weird stuff that I don't miss.
