Stretcher Beds
« on: November 07, 2011, 12:10:42 PM »
At the moment we have a couple of cheaper beds for the kids which have the spring steel legs which go from one side of the bed to the other, they are almost past their use by date.

I was wondering if I change to the ones with legs if there is any problem with the soft floor tub?

GG,
We've got 3 Anaconda/Spinifex stretcher beds in ours, and so far no problems (doesn't look like they will be as well).  The feet on them are big enough not to put too much pressure on the floor.
Mind you we do also have a piece of shade cloth (doubled over) underneath the floor, and a massive picnic rug, so that adds a bit of cushioning as well, and lessens the chance of stones rubbing through under the feet.
LJ
PS And just in case your thinking about the bunk bed style, DONT.  Assuming you have two capable functioning arms and hands, they take about 3 light years to assemble, weigh a ton, and sounds like your in a wind chime factory when you're assembling them too. Our's lives in the house for kids sleep overs...
I'm not so good with advice... can I interest you in a sarcastic comment?

As an idea to protect the floor, get a piece of the 'annexe matting' for inside the tent. We got an offcut from Keith that fitted. It's also nicer to walk on than the pvc floor and dirt drops through it so you're not walking it into the floor.

We use 2x stretcher beds for th ekids.

I made up a 'floor' out of them square foam block/mat things that store on the bed. Covers most of the floor... Otherwise i wouldnt put a stretcher on it..

Weve got one that folds out really fast from BCF(wanderer??) .I managed to get hold of a 4m x 3m pvc backed picnic blanket from supa cheap, cut it in half.Half goes under the bed,the other is perfect for the tent floor as it keeps the cold out in winter.

I bought a couple packs of those interlocking foam tiles that Lost mentioned from Costco for $16.95 for a pack of 8.  Cut a few squares up and we now have a complete covered tent floor in th camper.  Protects the base and adds a layer of insulation from the ground.  Nicer to walk on as well but most importantly protects the floor from my three boys......

GG we have the wild country beds for the kids from Rays, they would be about 5-8  years old??

The leggs span across under the bed. We have used them in sand dunes and red dirt even nice grass. We have't had any issue with the floor of our camper.

We have the bunk beds but use them as 2 singles. When packing up we just take the 2 legs off and then place the rest on top of the camper trailer bed easy to pack up and set up. Have no problems with the soft floor

Have heard the same about them, so we're getting one of these for our eldest for xmas (she's only 2.4, but will love having graduated from the baby tent!).. A good deal at the moment too! http://www.tentworld.com.au/showitem.aspx?item=127584&title=Oztent_Goanna_Stretcher_Bed

if you pop rivit the uprights and leave it so you can just remove the 2 feet it takes no time to assemble.  Remove the feet and the thing folds flat. Stored under the bed.
We leave ours made up so all we have to do to get the kids in bed is take it out from under the mattress, wack the feet on and shove the kids in.  In winter just add another blanket. It takes no more that 30 seconds to get the beds setup. (with 2 adults doing it). Not sure how long for 1 adult as its just part of the routine now.

Do you have any problems with the stretcher which ends up with the legs running lengthways rather than accross? I have a set of these with the intention of doing exactly the same as you have described but worry that the one with lengthways legs will collapse sideways.

The Oztent Goanna stretcher are huge, I have 2 of them and have used them consistently for the past 2-3 years. I use them at home in the patio room and also when camping. Yes they can be a little bit bulky/ heavy but it's nice to sleep on and it's not like I'm having to lug these in a backpack, just chuck them in the camper.

Oztent do great products, I have  a number of their items from RV5 tent with all the accessories to the chairs and beds.

I have no hesitation in recommending the Oztent brand. Pity they don't make camper trailers.

Cheers

The bunk beds that I have, came with 4 legs which run across ways (2 spare to make them single beds) and also came with 4 T joiners so you can make the into single beds. It also came 4 + joiners to make them bunk beds. (Hope you understand ???)
Sorry I can't answer your question about the legs running length ways as I do not use them like that

Oztent also do a Gecko stretcher bed which is halfway in size between the King Goanna & Goanna stretchers. We found the Goanna too small in case we had to sleep in them & the King was way too big.
The Gecko is not shown on Oztents website but can be seen on other sites - just Google it. We gots ours from Amazon Outdoors
cheers

Yep I understand your answer, thanks. I have the oztrail ones which don't come with spare legs. When you want to set them up as singles the safety rails from the top bunk become the legs for the second single. I was thinking I might get a second set of crossways legs made up.

I have 2 x Oztrail bunkbeds. 1st time I tried to put them up took about 1 hour for just 1 set because I had no idea. Down to about 5 mins each bunk now that I know what to do. They can be used as a bunk or 2 singles. Best set up with 3 kids is the doubles because more room is avalable instead of 4 singles on the floor.
