" I can understand why a lot of people never want to leave Australia, after all your've got everything, snow, mountains, bush and desert, its so beautiful. Why would you want to leave". Quote from Charley Boorman on the second last day after 32500km's filming the By Any Means docco from Ireland to Sydney, and famous for the Long Way Round, Long Way Down docco's

Yeah. went to Fraser not long ago, wasn't real keen on coming back though. Fraser does count for OS doesn't it?

Seriously we went to Thailand a couple of years ago, certainly gives a new perspective about how great this land of ours is (with acknowledgment and respect for the traditional owners of course).
I certainly was happy to be back although it was a great experience.

Rottnest Island off Perth, was cosidered O/S during WW2. The Troops on Rottnest were entitled to War Service pensions, while the troops that manned the guns near Cottesloe Beach didn't get War Service even tho' they could see Rottnest.

I've been to all the islands off the East Coast and Tassie ... yep I surely do have an appreciation for this great land of ours ... and compared to those islands ... it's HUGE!   ;D  I've never left this Wide Brown Land ... but if I did ... I'd go to either Christmas or Norfolk Islands or the Big White Bit down the bottom ... all still Aussie Territory to boot.

I have to agree with Chuckie ... why would you go anywhere else?

"Why go overseas"

To broaden your horizons, that's why, I did it and loved every minute of it, you really don't realise what we really have here, until you go.

My favourite places I visited, in no particular order;

Scotland
Ireland
Greece and the Greek Islands.
Czec Rep
The then Yugoslavia

These places stood out, for the peoples friendlyness mainly, but overall everywhere I went was brilliant.

I don't need to experience OS to appreciate what we have here. To me it equates to seeing someone else's backyard...absolutely no interest.

Seriously we went to Thailand a couple of years ago, certainly gives a new perspective about how great this land of ours is (with acknowledgment and respect for the traditional owners of course).

How do most ppl keep getting this so wrong?
The (legitimate) ppl you refer to will tell you it's their belief that no one owns the land!

there are some pretty good reasons to travel abroad, mainly to point out obvious differences in behaviors we have here.

i will mention 2 i have experienced.

"Oktoberfest", 100,000 people drinking having a good time and virtually no violence, as opposed to the local pub here where there are 100 people drinking and frequent violence. we have a so calle RSA (responsible serving of alcohol) program , germany has beer vending machines, go figure?

"Regulations" i have yet to see a country where there are even half the signs telling you what you can and cannot do compared to Australia, let alone been fined for jaywalking.

but yes our country geographically is definitely one of the nicest in the world.

I think I am lucky where I have lived and traveled in most states in Australia plus I have lived and travelled around the world.
There are some great sites in this country but by going overseas you get to see different cultures as well as sights that you cant get here. nothing prepares you for seeing the pyramids, or the Eiffel tower or going to the monopoly streets in London, or trying to order cold beers in a different language and experiencing the smells of the spice markets or the wonders of watching orangutans in the jungles in Indonesia.
I do admit it is nice to come back to Australia and Australia is very hard to beat but I am more than happy to experience what the rest of the world has to offer.

Australia is a beautiful place, but it is a bit hard to imagine historic buildings 1000yrs old when Aust is so young.
It is wonderful walking in the Lakes district of the UK and in Scotland - our highest mountain is only 2228m

You are all correct, Australia is a magnificent country, you could spend a lifetime exploring it and not see it all. :cup: :cup:
However, lets not get jingoistic, there are plenty of other magnificent places in the world that are worth exploring if you have the time and money.
It is not all about scenery. People and their cultures are just as important to experience.

We live in the best country on earth with the best places to explore but it's always seems to be cheaper to travel over seas than in our own country, one day the government will realise that if they were serious about tourism make it cheaper to travel for your own citizens and tourism will most likely blossom.

just my 2 cents worth.
