Standley Chasm Rip Off!!
« on: October 27, 2011, 11:42:32 PM »
I'm not sure if this should be in the Trips, Tracks, etc section or the daily rant, but what is with the ridiculous price the "owners" are now charging to get into Standley Chasm in the West MacDonnell Ranges?  We went there yesterday and they are now charging $10 per adult, and $25 for a family.  But they state that is 2 adults and 2 kids, so since we have 3 kids I am sure they would have charged us more.  Their sign says it is to provide "facilities".  But from what I could see there is NO money going into facilities.  They were in worse condition than they were when I was there 12 years ago. And you don't even get a guided tour for that price - just "permission" to walk in and look at the natural landscape.   We refused to pay their extortion money and left - plenty of other gorges to see for free!

Same here, we went back out there a couple of months ago - as we have been before many years ago we also skipped it due this, apparently it is a lucky country if 'you own it'.

Just fire up the chariot and go in from the other way!!! ;) I think we got hit as well with that charge in 2005.  All I think we got for that was loud tourists from overseas and over priced drinks and ice cream.

You are lucky you did not have to use the loos.
When we were there recently they wern't working as there was no water.
They had 2 very noisy motor driven pumps in the creek but I don't know where the water was going.
Very badly run operation.

You are right Rich, it is more crowded than Pitt Street in peak hour.

Cheers

Are they even legally allowed to charge different rates based on where you live?

We were there 2 months ago. Up from Melbourne, and pretty upset with the price, immediately turned around to leave but thought, arr bugger it, it must be good. It was spectacular but felt cheated. No receipt, just cash straight into the drawer. Much like all the local takeawys operating around home. Next stop was ormiston gorge which was awesome!

Went there in september, $25 for our family, which is outrageous.  Was like being in a 3rd world country, no receipt, no facilities, dirty old overflowing rubbish bins on the walk etc.  The chasm is good, but would never go there again.  Am not angry about it, it's their land and they can charge what they want, but would never go again.

Actually thought The Western Macdonald Ranges were all pretty much crap.  Fully intended to stay at glen helen "resort" and didn't even get out of the car it was that bad.  I'm sure some people on here love it but the brochures sure don't match the reality!  Went on to Palm Valley instead and it was the highlight of our 2 month trip.  Absolutely beautiful.

We refused to pay their extortion money and left
we did the same recently at a caravan park just outside of Emerald at Lake Maraboon / Fairburn Dam. we were told by the girl manning the desk it was going to be $50 for an unpowered site for the night for 2 adults an 8 year old and a 3 year old, i asked why it cost that price and she said "because we're busy at the moment". strangely enough we decided not to stay there the night and moved on to another town.

I agree about Glen Helen - we stayed there 12 years ago and it was the crappiest place I have ever stayed at.  We only stayed because we had done the Merreenie Loop Road from Kings Canyon and it was dark by the time we got there.  I called in there on this trip to see if they had improved at all - no - it was still as crappy as last time - I can't believe the brochures they put out - you would think it was a different place.

Funny about that....a certain "overseeing" (of so many of the areas and Lands) organisation sits in their $12m new office in Alice Springs, yet the people they are supposed to care for and assist still live in squallor, have enormous health issues and go hungry..... infrastructure in some areas is almost non existent or so run down that it might as well not be there....
On my soap box - you bet.... Our government agencies have very little idea of what is required (and never ask the people concerned) but listen to those people from "the office" who of course benefit enormously from government dollars....
Did you notice how clean areas of Alice are at present (or were a couple of months ago)?   Amazing what is tidied up when heads of Govt come to town.....!
Can't comment on Glen Helen because not sure if it is under the same auspices .....
