RACE abandoned... that aint a good sign

http://www.smh.com.au/sport/motorsport/marco-simoncelli-dies-after-crash-in-sepang-20111023-1mef7.html

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/95628
The Malaysian Grand Prix has been cancelled after an accident involving Gresini Honda's Marco Simoncelli.

There has been no official news on Simoncelli's condition, but organisers took the decision to cancel the race following a crash on lap two.

A bulletin from the organisers said: "Race cancelled as the medical centre staff is focusing on treating Marco Simoncelli and track action cannot be resumed in the current circumstances."

The Italian had been fighting with Alvaro Bautista for fourth when he lost the front of his bike and slid across the track, into the path of Colin Edwards and Valentino Rossi, both of whom appeared to hit the Honda.

Edwards was able to walk away from the crash but suffered a dislocated shoulder, while Rossi able to continue.

Concern centres on Simoncelli, who lay stricken on the track, his helmet having come off during the incident.

He was taken by ambulance to the circuit's medical centre.

How does a helmet come off?
The same thing happened to Wayne Gardner at Assen in the Netherlands. A rider went down, stopped mid track, got to his knees and crawled straight in front of Gardners Honda NSR500. Tore the downed riders helmet straight off and spun him around.
Not sure of the result for that but the guy lived.
No forcible helmet removal ends well. :(

Thoughts go out to Marco's family and friends, also to Colin Edwards, stuck in what was an unavoidable collision.
I ride road bikes and this brings home the danger, even at top level competition

I noticed it was cancelled, didnt know why but a shame.
2 deaths in motor racing in 2 weeks is not good but is part of the risk of the industry. I remember when my ex's uncle died at bathurst and hiswife said that its the way he wanted to go, doing what he loved, just a pity and a sour note to a good season

Very sad, he was a genuinely fast guy and by all appearances a decent person. Will be hard on Edwards as said, and also on Rossi who was pretty good mates with Simo.

This is the trailer for new MotoGP film "Fastest", spooky comment by Simoncelli at 1:36.

RIP big guy, you will certainly be missed, and heartfelt condolences to your family - most of whom would not have seen you for 2+ weeks since you flew to Australia for the PI GP.

WilSurf I don't think there's much that can be done to avoid this sort of crash. It's the same way that Craig Jones lost his life (hit by Andrew Pitt).

I was very moved by what Dr Costa wrote about Marco:

Today, after the tragedy of Malaysia, dottorcosta wrote this letter to Stephen Saragoni, director of Motosprint.
THE MARK OF VICTORY.

At dusk this Sunday full of pain my dream that desperately wants a small fragment of a star named after Marco Simoncelli was not blown away. Cruel fate, because it threatens my dream? What can I expect? And hope to do what, beyond the tears for the lost childhood and beyond naked anguish of pain, more and more unbearable because it makes me feel helpless and guilty for not having you close in my arms? Nothing. When fate knocks at the door feel the terrible feeling of being powerless. The young champion named Mark walked away with the sunset of Malaysia and his going was a noise of life, joyful noise that Marco has always given us. The noise of the interview that Mark has released me at Mugello in July while being massaged by his trusted physiotherapist. That day, at the beginning of the interview, I wanted to turn an old gentleman and he told me: "Diobò! I'm just a guy with a thick hair quick pleasing to many, loved by his girlfriend and his parents. "The massage continues, her skin is caressed by expert hands that glide on his athletic body and I walk away a little respect for the ritual . With emotion carry the conclusion of the interview that I did for the book I'm writing and that with all my affection dedicate. Here are the final questions.

... Dottorcosta: "What do you think of the pain"?
Mark: "I do not like. But stand it. It 'no use complaining. Bear it in silence. Diobò's better that way. "

dottorcosta: "What do you think of the pain of the 'soul'?
Mark: "It's ugly, so ugly, but after the discomfort that comes from this bad thing, I come as a charge. I feel better and better the bike I ride "

dottorcosta: "When you run against those who run"?
Mark: "I would say to beat the other. I do not want to be behind a few fists. Then, when I think I run because I tell you that I feel a unique sensation, you do not know how to explain, but it is something special, hidden inside of me. "

dottorcosta: Because you have long hair "?
Mark: "I like them, do not make me feel normal, they make me feel special, myself, the only one."

dottorcosta: "Do you feel lonely?"
Mark: "No! No! There's my family, my girlfriend my friends who enjoy my successes, there is a mobile clinic that helps me in difficult moments. How well I feel there is around me, so much good that warms me. "

The massage is finished, the interview is over. Paul's father and the pretty girlfriend of Mark listened very pleased. I thank, with a caress, one of my favorite drivers and tell my reflection: "When you fall in this league and you have fallen so many times you have a lot of criticism, judgments, evil, unjust, envious. Many have even claimed to teach you to ride a bike. Some are strongly advised to tell you to feel comfortable, to advise caution. Remember, however, what did I say? I confessed that the collective, barking against humanity, has forgotten, perhaps because he can not remember when he started to walk. It falls, gets up there, it's back to fall, it gets up again and often to fall back. All this accompanied by the mother's smile that comforts us and encourages us to persevere, no hint of reproach. Then we have all learned to walk shipped, but few have managed to take the path that leads to the heights of life, because the climb was too difficult and tiring. Why blame them? Are not already severely punished by their failure? But you, dear Marco, not just go up the steps to the summit of life, but also those of the podium, where there is the cup as a prize, but the recognition of your strength that you have looked into the face of death and defeat. "

Now my prophecy has come true. You have climbed onto the podium of Czechoslovakia and Australia. Today in Malaysia have looked into the face of Death. And while I was wrapping his black cloak with you tell him: "Diobò, but do not see that I am human, because I have my dreams and my talent are the bread of the gods that you can never touch? Do not you realize that just steal my body? On the contrary, my smile, my goodness, my sympathy will remain forever in the hearts of all. Forever. Can not you see the check I gave you tears are about to be turned into rapture? We put a little 'time, but I strongly believe in this miracle, especially for my family and my girlfriend. This is my victory in the Malaysian Grand Prix last two laps. "

Who in sport, chasing his dreams, simultaneously pursuing his tragedy, comes from the world of mankind into the world of the divine, bloody, violent, but still divine. Whoever dies pursuing a dream of death and smiles the smile erases any violence. The mountaineer smiles at the dizzy height, the diver smiles to unrest of the abyss, the biker smiles intoxication of the speed. Sport is the stage where the body and mind are celebrating their power at that stage of life that is youth. Motorcycle rider in the gesture of the risk is enhanced by a thin thread that separates in the gray asphalt, life from death. A border drawn by the small intestine danger, where life, in search of victory, goes up to the thrill of his excess. Today, Mark, did you feel that thrill. I love you. And do not forget you.

Lets hope it does not change the way MOTO GP is run. It was a freak accident the front washed out by all intent purposes he and the bike should have simply slide off the track, but a common move the guys use when on the way down is attempt to stand the bike up with your elbow and shoulder, this appears to be what "may" have happenned as the bike by some freak of physics found traction/grip on the front and simple went the way the bike was always going to go, left. Was unfortunate that Edwards and Rossi were there as well. Thing is Edwards drifted a little wide as Rossi tried to get underneath him thus putting him on a collision course with Marco. Edwards hit him square in the back then Rossi ran over his upper body, just very unlucky.
There is no way it could have been prevented, but im sure all the wossers will now jump on the new 1000cc MOTP GP bike bandwagon of to big to fast to dangerous.

RIP Marco Simoncelli

I thought it odd at how quick they got him off the track and into the back of the ambo. There didn't appear to be any attempt to stabilise on the scene. It was like keystone cops the way they dragged him off on the stretcher.

He slide face down for a bit. Im pretty sure the safety crew knew time was not on their side and get him as quick as poss to the medical centre.
Well I hope thats why they did it and not through ignorance.
Steve Parrish said they had reports he was conscious when he was in the medical centre but his injuries were just to great.

In all the Club days, Bathursts, GP's and Sbikes I've marshalled over time, I dont think I've ever seen someone dragged off without being stabilized. And sadly I've see fatalities at race meetings before :(  I've seen some extremely gungho marshalls too, but most are put in their place much to their disgust...

I agree with Rowan he was still movin very very quick when the helmet came off + the weight of 2 bikes on his head, gravel wears skin down real fast... Getting him help quickly would have been a priority.

I dont know about being conscious, I'd say in all honesty I think it was almost instant.

I've seen some extremely gungho marshalls too, but most are put in their place much to their disgust...

The ambulance could not actually get onto the track where he went down, so the marshalls stretchered him to the ambulance and had to manhandle the stretcher over the fence.

They also dropped him on the way to the fence according to spectators... one of them could not keep up and let go, and down he went. Disgusting. There is a photo of it happening and I'm sure footage will surface soon enough.

Marshalls are volunteers, but at this level I think it's time Dorna dipped into their profits and paid for some sort of formalised training for all GP marshalls.

Worth noting that the Sepang track managment had already been fined 15,000 euros on the Friday for poor marshalling practices...
