Which Headlamp
« on: August 14, 2011, 09:43:29 PM »
I'm in the market for a new head lamp and thought I'd see what everyone is currently using?

I'm considering a led lenser h14, but I have also heard good things about the zebralight h51.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Manjimike

Hi Sako,
What do you intend using it for? close up work, distance. Are you after economy of batteries?
If you think about each of these points, you will be able to make a better choice once people give you what they use.

Cheers Mike

Hi sako,

There is a lot of good info at candlepowerforums.

Personally, we have a couple of ZebraLight H51's and they are simply awesome. For a single AA battery powered light, they are super bright and have great spill. Personally, I prefer spill to spot as I find it more practical. I use eneloops for all my flashlights (recharged with a Maha Powerex MH-C9000 - which even has a 12v cig adapter for recharging when out bush) and the H51 runs really well off them. Besides, on the brightest setting you'll only get about an hour of burn time, so it's quite easy to go through the batteries.

Anyway, I give the H51 a big thumbs up

I have had my head torch for over 15 years now and still going strong..its a Petzel Duo.can flip between normal incandescent globe,  LED's and has zoom focusing as well..how much the cost today Ive no idea..but it has been a very robust head lamp...BUT I just recently bought myself a Coleman LED Quad Lantern from Big W for $61.00 and run it on re chargable D batteries..great lantern as each quarter of the lantern can be removed and used separately if needed....not bad I thought for $61.00.....Kind Regards John

One of them which I also use for camping is this one -

I have the H14 as well. Being able to adjust the beam is very handy. Never had any issues with them.

I have the Led Lenser H7 R . It is a brilliant little light that is easy to adjust between spread and spot lights and is very bright.
You can also adjust the power setting way back to bugger all so the batteries last for ages.
Plus the bonus of being rechargeable by 240v or 12v.
Very good quality that should last for many years.

I currently have a Petzl MY05 which I am happy with, however the kids and the wife now want headlamps.

The light will mostly be used for general camp duties, cooking cleaning, set up etc...
I like low, medium and high settings.  Spread would be preferred, but the distance spot does come in handy when Offroad, out on foot etc...

The led lenser covers most of these features I think.

I will keep searching.

Can anyone recommend anywhere online to purchase from with out the risk of getting an imitation off eBay?

Doing a lot of work in ceilings, a head torch is the best thing.
Had an old Petzl Zoom with a halogen bulb, awesome light but the bulb likes some power.
In the end the band died. Still have the lamp though.

Now I use an Eveready dual white LED unit. Lots of light, good battery life and cheap to replace.
I got a sweater for Xmas, really wanted a moaner or screamer.

I have the Led Lenser H14 and find it great, very bright and has a great spot beam. It does get heavy after a while. I also have a Petzel Tikka which whilst not as bright is an awesome little light. I prefer it for around the camp and reading etc.

After having a 'tactical' freebie that I got from anaconda a while ago, and being very happy with it, this thread got me motivated.  So I ordered one of the 5w cree ones for about $10 on ebay.  WOW it isw bright.  The only thing is the size of the head strap seems to be built for pinheads...  Still I think I'll get a couple more for the kids.

and bunning sell the Vitari ones for about 12-15 bucks, they have white and red LED's, you can change the angle of the light ie the LED's are on a hinge. so far we have been happy with ours, but then I suppose it depends on what you want it for. We use ours for eating dinner in the dark and generally wandering around the campsite.
