Our "Hard Floor" Adventure GT camper is insured with CIL. The awning is covered as it is permanently attached to the camper. I got $7k extra cover for the Engel, the Genny, awning walls and "other" bits so long as they were "locked" or "chained" to the camper when stolen etc. It was the best cover i could find "coverage" wise. They basically covered every situation except salt water canvas damage. I honestly cant rememeber how much i pay per year but i dont think its any more than $400 or $500 for an agreed value of $52 000 + $7000 contents.

Touch wood i havent used it yet.

Rang GIO today $625 is the best they can do that's with my 60% no claim bonus plus a discount for another policy with them. I asked why so expensive and told her your quote Dan of $550 (I did drop the price to 43k) its because of where I live so according to them its the country is more likely to be stolen than Sydney ? you done alright Dan

Macca

Macca, I went GIO after sorting out the "box trailer" issue however TCIS Insurance Brokers also gave me a quote which was quite competitive. Have you tried them yet?

ok called them for my trailer and with 1 claim in the last 5yrs $244... thats a shed load better than CIL.... bout 200
I hate Market Value.. "$xx000, or market value which ever is less.
So will they turn around and say we can buy you a new higher spec Lucky Chows camper for $3000 - here you go.

One of the 6 documents they emailed to read through.. ?
Quote
Words that have a special meaning

In this policy there are words that have a special meaning.  Where Caravan is listed this shall also mean Camper Trailer, which is further defined below.

Camper Trailer – means a camper trailer or pop-top caravan registered for use on a public street, and its camper trailer accessories and fittings.  A  camper trailer consists of the trailer and the enclosed canvas structure permanently attached to the trailer.  This does not include fixtures, fittings, accessories and appliances that are not permanently installed.

Your policy provides Australia-wide cover.

If your Campertrailer is damaged, we will do one of the following;

Repair or replace your Camper trailer; or

Pay you the market value of your camper trailer.  The market value is the amount of money it would cost to replace your camper trailer in your local area.   We take in to account the condition of your camper trailer.

We decide which one we will do.

Flood – Damage to your property by flood.  This policy includes cover for flood.

Could get interesting on the replacement/market value issue.

Being in Insurance a few years ago (and I don't think things change overnight so to speak) the Co. I worked for said Market Value meant Red Book values (taking into account the condition of your CT) ... so always take photos of your camper every time you go camping!

If it's written off, then they assume the condition (they say they really look at it), but how are they to know it was pristine if it's been totalled unless you provide them with documented proof like regular photos?  By law they'd have to take them into account ... wouldn't they?  Better to have records than none I guess too.

It amazes me how one can spend $40k or more on a camper and try and save $50 on insurance.  If I had a camper of that value I would insure with a specialist i.e. CIL.  I have my camper insured with CIL.

By the way, GIO and CIL are both Suncorp companies.

i understand what you mean, but CIL haven't impressed me.. on both attempts i gave them to try.

reading the PDS for both companies, I can't see that much different from GIO, who i have all of my other covers with (home, contents, vehicles etc).

.. the only way i can afford a $40k camper is to save all of those $50 amounts where possible!

Considering CIL wanted to charge me about $200 more, why not go elsewhere & save. Every little bit helps & can be put towards more camping items  ;D
It's a bit like spending time finding the best price on the internet to save a couple of dollars rather than going into the 1st shop you see

As for the Suncorp companies, my 4wd is insured through Vero (also a Suncorp company) & is a lot cheaper than GIO to insure even though I have 3+ policies with GIO - go figure

cheers

I'd also question their "Flood" cover.

As with house insurance flood cover, most insurances will not cover rising water levels from rivers , lakes or dams as part of "flood cover".

There have been some good threads in recent months about questions to ask insurance companies when making enquiries. I think Bruce ( Lost ) did a good thread not long ago which contained fairly pertinent questions.

Cheers.

Cheers guys.

CIL includes Flood, like car insurance it is automatic.  It is Home Building and Contents and Business insurance you need to watch out for.  In saying that if you do not have flood on your home contents insurance you will not have flood cover for the contents away from the home either.

Thank you linmac for starting this post as I have started to do the ring around myself (delivery in 4weeks today).  The differences I have found so far are:

GIO - $200 excess, contents $500 - new for old covered for 1 year
AAMI - $300 excess, contents $500 (will not increase) - new for old covered for 1 year - extra $$ to pay monthly - NO THANKS
CIL - $200 excess, contents $1000 - will increase for $15-$16 per extra $1000 - new for old covered for 2 years - no extra $$ to pay monthly
MIHA $200 excess, contents $500 - new for old covered for 1year (I think)

Gonna try NRMA and TCIS next.  Will have to print off the questions listed by Lost and call any potentials back to make sure I have everything covered.  May also try the argument that Annex came with the CT (which it did) as I only had to purchase one wall and door to complete, to see if this brings down my premium.

Good Luck linmac.  Look forward to see who you end up with.

My Camp-o-matic hard floor is insured with NRMA for $20,000 plus $4,000 contents, but no annex cover listed on latest policy (this has to be rectified).  This years premium is worth $413.99 and includes (if you believe them) Multi policy discount of $126.74 plus 60% no claim bonus discount of $532.33.  So their telling me that without any discounts this policy would be worth $1,073.06.  Yeah right!

Bit of an update on this info after speaking to NRMA about my policy.

When questioned about why the annex cover had been removed I was told that they automatically drop the cover after 5 years, and so I now have $2,500 annex cover and it has to be listed as "other" on the policy.  So for any NRMA policy holders out there, make sure your annex cover isn't dropped from the policy when you go to pay each year.

I also played around with the contents cover to see what effect it had on the premium.  There is and automatic contents cover to the value of $1,000, and to drop my total contents cover from $4,000 to $2,000 it only dropped the premium by $10, so I decided to make the total contents cover $3,000, which is more than enough to cover the odds and ends in the camper.

So now with $20,000 cover on the camper, $2,500 annex (other) and $3,000 contents cover, my premium is $423.73.  This includes the so called discounts I listed previously.

I think It's thee old story. You can't be loyal to your insurance company, every year we get an increase in premiums and every year the good lady rings them to say good bye we can get it cheaper elsewhere and the price comes down. Sometimes we move for a year and then go back, new costumers get a discount and the loyal ones pay extra.
