Just wondering about an upcoming change to NBN.
I'm with Optus  now so my email
Is blablabla @optusnet.com.au but when I change provider will my email address need to change to blablabla@newprovider.com ???
I'm dreading it if this is the case?
Can I arrange to keep my Optus address with another provider?
Thanks in advance

Not sure if you can.
That's why most people use gmail, yahoo, hotmail type addresses

Some providers allow you to pay a fee to keep an email account open.  We do that with my wife’s email.  $30 a year to keep an internode email account, even though we are using iiNet internet...

Just ask Optus.  They may have this facility.

We had the same at work, but by keeping one mobile phone account with them on the lowest monthly package we kept the optusnet email account.

after having my optusnet.com.au email for 10+yrs, I bit the bullet. IMWO the better idea is to setup a Gmail or similar account

If you chop and change ISP's over years it becomes a PITA but gmail/Hotmail etc don't care who your ISP is.

x2, that's exactly what I'm doing atm, the days a gone when an isp could blackmail you into staying with them to keep your email address. Or another alternative is to register a web address and use the email provided with that

I think those days went last decade, more likely the one before that. If you have an android phone you should already have a Gmail address and I think Gmail is pretty good.

We are looking at the email address thing as well due to shopping for other provider deals (not NBN at this stage)
I was looking at some of the above suggestions and set up a gmail etc account and suffer some short term pain and have all our our statements and utility bills etc sent to this and then forwarded to whatever .com.au address we are using at the time. Have been with Optus for going on 15 years now.

We have friend that change providers around every three years and they always have to send an email saying we are "here" now.

Thankyou all for your replies
I do have a gmail account but used the optus one as the main one
Looks like I need to cop it on the chin and adjust all contacts to the gmail one.

There are other dedicated email providers. I have used fastmail for the last 12 years or so. All they do is email, they have a number of levels of service. I've used them for work and private email. Their webmail interface is great, I like it way more than gmail (and I use it too).

I have been using a Gmail account for a number of years, and as stated, moving ISP is no issue at all with a Gmail account, travel anywhere in the world - log on and away you go. BUT, the best thing about Gmail is..... using it with an Android phone. The SYNC function is sooooo good.

I use the Gmail contacts section for email and phone contacts, Change or add a contact and within seconds your phone updates the new info. Lose your phone ?, get a new phone ? - no problem, simply get new phone, add Gmail account and set it to sync. All your old contacts will appear in the new phone almost immediately.

For convenience, my wife and Sync to the same list. Another advantage is maintaining your contact on a BIG computer screen, not a small phone screen.

I know lots of our members would be using sync, but for those not syncing Gmail contacts to Android it will be a revelation in my opinion. Sync appears on other systems, but I am only familiar on the Gmail/Android version.

Reviving an old topic.
Very soon will be leaving Optus ,been with them since cable was introduced way back.
Will be in the country so no idea about ISP yet [most probably Aussie Broadband]
Will be on the road for 4/6 months of the year.
So looking at changing all to a GMail account [will use it in Outlook].
Going to be a lot of work transitioning.
For those that have made the move to GMail, what are your thoughts now, Happy or not?

For private use as you'll be using - it works fine, and they have great spam filters.

I believe you can pay a few bux as someone mentioned to keep the optus going for few mths extra if needed. it is painful changing, going through it still....

Sometimes a fresh start is a good start, that's why I format every 6 months.
I then only add to contacts as I receive emails.

Might be worthwhile keeping your existing account open (if possible) for a year while you sort out the changeover...

The changeover isn’t that difficult, but more of a just in case type of thing...

As for Gmail, been using it since it started with no issues to report... as previously mentioned, the spam filter is particularly good...

Just like changing banks. Go through email history to see who all your billers are, change them over to your new email address.
The positive side is you wont get anymore crap emails, until you enter those "free" competitions.

Consider this piece of excellent advice.

Whenever you use a service by a company on the internet that's free, YOU are the product that's being sold.

Google maps, Apple  IOSetc. Google scan your emails, compare it to your location and searches, and sell your information to companies so they can sell to you better.

I don't use Google signed in, always remain logged out.

OK, I do use Gmail, but that has so little of value in it as most of my emails are directed via my "professional" accounts.

Working in an environment where I see the amount of detail that is available to organisations about your internet activity (through thinks like Google Analytics and the Mailout software) it's actually quite scary... I rarely click through from the email newsletters etc, instead going straight to the company's website.

Used to be with Telstra...so, @bigpond.com.  Now with TPG, and Telstra indicated a year and half ago that a yearly fee to keep bigpond would apply ( if I didn't have another plan with them, which I didn't ).

They still haven't charged me, so I'm still @bigpond.com !!

Setup the new email account and add it to a signature so that all your contacts will get the new email address, same with outgoing mail as it will be from the new account as most people will just reply to a previous email.
