Gas Bottle WARNING...
« on: April 26, 2018, 10:52:15 AM »
Jus thought I'd throw this up on here as a word of warning for others...

We bought a Gasmate gas bottle from Bunnings at least 12 months or so ago. Working from home the other day we could both smell gas, strongest in the garage... suspiciously around the area of the gas bottle.

Sure enough...

(Sorry for the huge size of the video...)

And a link if the video doesn't show for some: https://i.imgur.com/53BIhWD.mp4

So, a word of warning. Check your gas bottles regularly. This could have ended a lot worse than it did.

Where is the video Trinity?
Was it leaking from the breather screw?

Hi yea, big problem if the gas leaks in a closed area.

Was talking to a canopy dealer and reckons we should have no gas bottles in the rear canopy of the 79. Can have a sealed cabinet added in it or have the gas bottle outside the canopy. Will have to sort that out. Maybe there is space under the canopy to store it, but it has to be vertical. Maybe there is space between the fuel tank and the rear axle, or might have to put a bracket on the rear...

Good luck with putting a bracket on the rear.
Not legal in Vic. to mount a gas bottle in what Vic Roads refer to as a collision zone/area.
Even if it's in an approved mounting bracket.  On a roof rack might be simpler.

Was leaking from the thread... 😕 Hubby suspects sealant has perished, perhaps.

Those bottles are supposed to have a minimum working life of 10 years.
More like not enough sealant used to fit the tap in the top.

Hi Trinity, Yes was leaking alright lots, I have never seen that before, I always use neat washing up detergent and dribble a bit over every connection, even after I get them refilled I dribble a bit around the tap and shut off screw and outlet, Craig

Hi Trinity, it would be good to send this video off to the Gas inspectorate in Qld.
Email here,  gassafe@dnrme.qld.gov.au
It may warrant an investigation which may lead to a recall.

I rang them up.  Asked them over the phone.  At Head office in Kew,
Even friends at the State Highway Task Force wouldn't say it was ok.
It's just like those Rod holders they fit on BBars. lots of people do it, but it doesn't mean it's ok.

We have been in touch with them also already (well, think it was them... James spoke to some compliance mob! LOL!). Not sure if they have decided to investigate further or not.

We haven't been in touch with Bunnings yet (haven't had the time to go into a store), but have been informed by Gasmate that we'd be entitled to a replacement through Bunnings.

Hopefully this is a once-off issue and we're just the unlucky ones who got a lemon gas bottle and discovered it before it went kaboom. It's like a lot of things though - we all know we should check things like gas bottles regularly, but how many of us actually do? My hope is that this might trigger people to do so, rather than being a "name and shame" post. Maybe it is a dodgy line of bottles, maybe not. I only named the brand on the off-chance that it is, because being a Bunnings product no doubt there's a few of them out there.

Seen plenty in SA. Mostly Patrols with a gas bottle attached to the rear wheel. No roof rack (yet) :)

I can find a reference for rod holders.

Oddly enough I found this for gas bottles. "Items or equipment mounted on the rear of the vehicle (for
example toolboxes or a rack to carry a motorcycle or gas
bottles) are included in the measurement of rear overhang."
link
Implies it is okay

Ok, you have my interest now.

An exerpt from ref. supplied.
Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)
Installations
All gas operated appliances installations must comply with
the applicable requirements of Australian Standard AS 5601
– Gas Installations.
In addition any specific installation requirements specified
by the appliance manufacturer, such as ventilation, and
minimum clearance requirements, must be complied with.

Items or equipment mounted on the rear of the vehicle (for
example toolboxes or a rack to carry a motorcycle or gas
bottles) are included in the measurement of rear overhang.
Was in the section on Dimensions.
Mind you it refers to Motorhomes as the vehicle covered

This is stretching the OP's original purpose.
Might be better in another thread.
