Stat Write Offs
« on: January 30, 2018, 09:50:09 PM »
Does anyone know the rules (particularly in WA) around what can and cannot be reused from a Stat Write Off?
I have the opportunity to purchase the chassis and suspension from a Track Trailer Topaz that was a Stat Write Off and since I have been looking at building a hybrid camper this would potentially make a great base.
Since the VIN is attached the chassis I don't believe the chassis can be reused, even though the damage was to the body. But I am hoping someone can show be this is wrong or a way in which the chassis could be re-registered.

Cheers,
Leachy

This build might help you    http://www.myswag.org/index.php?topic=39365.0       .. But maybe look at it as Not all the chassis needs to be re-used,  You decide which parts need to be left out of the new build Chassis  and have a hand full of  receipts for some steel supplies / welding etc to show if asked .
Or have a read here   https://www.transport.wa.gov.au/licensing/license-a-repairable-written-off-vehicle.asp

Owning a 2009 Tvan. I understand that the trailer VIN is on the A frame between the Tow Hitch & jockey wheel.
Usually a series of stamped letters and Numbers.  Not sure if the Topaz is the same.
Potential repairs to that area may mean the loss of the VIN and need a new VIN assigned?
The Topaz had a problem with their A frame that had to be checked out recently as a factory recall didn't they. Just a couple, not all of them.

Ok, the van I bought to use for parts on my build was a Stat Write off. The draw bar on mine had to be replaced due to it being bent anyway so that got rid of the original VIN. It was a new build so who's to say I didn't build the chassis?

As long as it is structurally sound you can use the whole chassis as a spare part. Just need new numbers and call it home made.  The only thing wrong with this is if the chassis has a design patent on it and if it does you are effectively stealing someones design.

It's one of those things that seems to end in tears for some and ok for others, I'd make sure you do your homework before going down that path as it also seems to vary state to state, people who think they can repair a damaged van/camper and register it as homemade seem to have a lot more issues than people who mainly just use a write off for parts though.

It was on ebay for small change after that - its probably in the ebay bargain of month thread.

I remember the one, when you just repair an existing make and then try to pass it off as homemade I think you are going to have issues.

The original post is only using the chassis and suspension. He's not rebirthing a whole van so should be fine if he replaces the section that has the Vin on it.

As long as he can make it look fairly new, (maybe a coat of paint/rock protection)  it's probably the possibility of rebirthing that makes transport departments a bit suspicious. I think he should be fine, but it would be a major blow to get to the end of a build only to not be able to register it. Hence the comment about doing your homework.

Thanks for the responses everyone, it has given me some ideas. The official line from the Transport Department is that the suspension can be reused but not the chassis.  I'm thinking replacing the draw bar and regalvansing would allowing me to claim it as a new build. I just need to have a look at it and decide how difficult that is going to be.  My concern, as others have pointed out, would be doing the build and then not being able to get it registered, though looking at what others have done it doesn't seem an impossible task.

Cheers

Leachy, You might find that a chat with a Vehicle Engineer could be helpful.
You might be able to prove the rest of the chassis is ok and have a paper trail to help you.
Not saying it's going to be a cheap exercise either.
