probably because most customers aren't prepared to pay what it costs to do a job like that

Spot on, aggressive consumerism has killed our game... My generation wasn't taught those skills.

My young bloke is loving woodwork (Furniture Studies) in Grade 11, & has mentioned he wouldn't mind keeping going with it (although, as per most teens, he doesn't have any real idea of what he wants to do yet :'().

I take it there's no real career path in, I guess you'd call it, cabinet making ???

Would I be right in saying most "cabinet makers" these days just assemble flat-packs & that's about it ??? (& apologies to any cabinet makers out there who can & do use real skills & abilities :cup:)

would really depend who and where he worked for, but for the most part yeah that is modern day cabinet making....30 years ago I did work experience in a furniture making factory, after 2 days I was "making" cabinets alone that were going out to shops to be sold, the hard work was done by the wood machinest already. Not to many people want to pay the dollars it cost to buy high end furniture these days, can't imagine there's many job vacancies around for jobs like that'll, though I guess the occasional one would pop up. Just like hardly anyone wants to pay for high end tradies to spend the hours it takes to do jobs a certain way, it's a knock it out as quick and cheaply as you can world these days for the most part.

If you only want to do it once maintenance free you could use one of the concealed fix composite board solutions on steel joists but it won't be cheap-

although you'll certainly enjoy the beer watching your neighbours regularly recoat their timber decks and replace them at some stage. Timber outdoors is like buying a timber boat.

There's no Great Evil conspiracy against consumers within engineering, manufacturing and supply. Just the many tradeoffs incurred to satisfy diverse tastes, priorities and wallets. But first comes all the insatiable Gummint eggsperts, nanny-staters and usual suspects.

Is that recycled teak from the Hunter area? Looks a whole lot like a floor we did for Emirates. The problem with small batches is when they decide they want to do a small reno 6 months later and there isn't any left..... :'(
It gives a great effect though. That wouldn't be out in the weather?

I've done all mine in merbau. After laying I clean it with a mix of a cup of cheap no name napisan in a bucket of hot water. After a scrub and wash down Gets rid of most of the Tanin. then give 2 coats with Cabots oil. Not the water based, the turps one.  I am pretty slack at re-oiling usually every 2nd year. A quick clean as above and comes up a treat.
I use the "natural" oil and not the "merbau". The merbau has a tint that makes the timber look good when first done, but over time builds up a layer that starts to look patchy.

I have a small treated pine deck that looks a bit crappy......gonna hit it with a gernie and paint it with decking paint...grey !!

In a new life, it would be fake maintenance free decking....along with the artificial grass !!

Actually it's tiles..  ;D  200mm X 1200mm but yeah it looks pretty good. It's semi outdoors, under a patio with dado walls..
