Stabilizer Leg Stuck
« on: May 07, 2017, 06:28:43 PM »
Hi,

I have a forward fold camper trailer with 4 x stabilizer legs.

One of the rear legs has become stuck in the extended position and I am buggered if I can work out how to 'unstick' it.... ???

Does anyone have any tips or tricks that might help me out?

Thanks everyone!

Wht brand of leg?
Photos?
is anything moving?
does it look bent?
do the locking pins look bent (Mine was)
you should be able to unbolt it from the trailer and service it.

If the leg is locked at maximum travel with the trailer still sitting on it?
Jack up the trailer to take the load off it.  A use for that high-lift/Farm Jack you've still got.
Rock the winder back and forward and it may unlock and allow it to return.

thanks for the quick replies guys.

The legs look like the ALKO pictured here: https://www.caravansplus.com.au/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=6678

Yes, it is under weight but I don't think it is fully extended.

The nut turns but the leg neither extends or shortens. Nothing appears bent.

Maybe I need to get a trailer jack and take the weight off it completely, before unbolting from trailer?

Thanks!

Hi.
There is no need to jack up the trailer. The rear leg is stuck,so retract all the other legs and then raise the jockey wheel which will lower the A-frame until the offending leg  is off the ground. Now that there is no pressure on the leg it should be easy to sort out.

Cheers, Ray

Well done Old Bugger.
He could still use the farm jack any way.
He could truthfully say he's actually used the Jack after all this.

thanks old bugger, that did the trick!

took the leg off, took it apart and found the issue.

The pin that goes through the main bolt (which in turn turns the 2 x little cogs inside the mechanism) had snapped.....

i guess stabilizer legs are not really designed for heavy lifting and more so for stabilizing...

thanks again guys

I had a similar prob with the leg on my modcon. Turned out that the roll pin that holds the internal bevel gear came out of the mechanism (too small a roll pin) & the winder wasnt moving the internal gears.
If you can get the weight of it & fold it up you might be able to see if this has happened to yours.

Funny that !! Yep, the internal mechanism isn't designed to lift a ton. If the crank handle becomes hard to turn, you have too much weight on it !

And to think I used a rattle gun to raise mine to change the wheels before I knew better, I must have got lucky because they did it a few times without any issues.

Yep. I agree. I always gringe when you see people using an 18v impact driver on them.  Only a matter of time before it snaps something

If you cringe when someone uses an 18v impact driver, I'll get the popcorn when someone pulls out a 36v rattle gun 😂

I use an 18V impact gun on mine, set to lowest speed and stop cranking after the first impact action starts.......1 or 2 hits.
