patriot x1 alternative
« on: May 08, 2016, 08:29:19 PM »
Hi,
I was wandering if anyone had experience with the Summit K2 or Metalian Maxi, I'm looking for a decent alternative to the rather expensive X1 (yes I considered dot6). I like the idea of the K2 being a rear fold tent as it would fit better in most camping sights (more caravan like) as apposed to a large camping area with living/cooking on one side and sleeping on the other with a trailer in the middle.

I looked at the Metalian in person along with the Patriot. Honestly the Metalian is one of the best i've seen and as mentioned they've been around for a fair while in South Africa. The biggest thing that I like about the Metalian is everything is included in the price from the 90L fridge to all the awnings with wall kits etc and it's modular allowing you to tailor your set up to the space available or time you are spending away.

Metailian is new here in Australia and even if they were priced at the same level as the Patriot I think they would still offer some stiff competition but when I looked at the X1 limited edition it was $40,990 plus on roads, then after I added things like the fridge, walls for the awning and solar panel etc I was looking at $45k.

I would take a serious look at the Metalian it's extremely well put together and I think it's pretty tough to beat for the price.

I looked hard at the offtrax outback - similar to the metalian and was very impressed. The only thing I would say is check the dimensions of the tent width if you go to limited size camp sites. Because they fold out both sides they end up a bit wide for van park sized site. They pack up like a caravan with drawers and cupboards for your clothes etc which was a major plus for us - no more boxes. Very short and light too which is good for storage at home. It made it to our short list and was knocked out only by a couple of personal things. Quality was first class.

We went to the QLD caravan show yesterday and checked out the conqueror uev-390 and the patriot x1.
The conqueror setup (layout and inclusions) looked good, however the construction was not up to scratch, flimsy doors and pin latches where disappointing.
Patriot x1. Great looking solid construction, good awning and tent setup, easily accommodate bike rack. But over priced, small fridge box, over priced, very little in the way of inclusions, small stove and expensive options.
One of the best things about the x1 (and the Drifta DOT trailers) is the use of custom foxwing/rapidwing type awning. These are sealed to the trailer, can be raised and can be deployed without settling up the tent. This is great for roadside shelter over the kitchen area for lunch stops etc. It would be great if something like that could be incorporated into your design.
We have also checked out the Metalian Maxi and we love the trailer, the support and positive attitude from Offtrax and Heinz (Metalian South Africa). At this time I think the trailer is let down by the tent (lack if midge mesh and gaps in the tent left and right hand sides against the trailer where it goes from horizontal to vertical). I understand that a new tent is in development and depending on the time frame and the result the Maxi could well be a great choice. We have asked Offtrax to keep us informed on tent development, they say it should be done by early Aug, good thing we aren’t in a hurry.

Thank you all for the positive comments regarding the Metalian Maxi. We've had a stand last week at the Sydney 4x4 Adventure show right next to Patriot - and the overwhelming independent comments that we've received was that the Metalian was a very worthy contender for the top spot - irrespective of the fact that our fully optioned Maxi was about $4,000 cheaper than the Patriot on show. The new tent has been launched is is a huge improvement over the previous Howling Moon tent. Especially noticeable was the temperature difference beneath the aluminized tropical fly and awnings - about 8 degrees cooler than standard canvas. We will be at the Canberra show again this weekend - so please pop in or ask any questions that you may have on the Metalian Maxi.
