Locked HiLux - Good first tow vehicle?
« on: August 20, 2016, 01:17:57 AM »
Hey all.

The mates and I go offroading / camping frequently enough tha I reckon it's time to transition to a real 4b (As opposed to my current sedan which handle easy fire trails but not much more) and in time,  a DIY soft floor trailer. A friend of a friend is selling an early 2000s 3.0 TD Hilux for ~12.5k - comes with rear ARB locker, winch, and snorkel. ~270k kms, needs timing belt swap in the next year and potentially needs radiator done, has some gnarly scratches and a couple of decent dints  (although never been in any accidents... allegedly). Only rated to tow 1.8tonne but should be plenty for a light soft floor.

I like it because it comes with lockers, winch and snorkel, has decent fuel economy for a 4b, is relatively cheap (I can pay cash for it) and should be easy to maintain.

That said, I don't know that much about offroad vehicles. Any thoughts on getting the hilux?  Anyone had bad experiences? Any known issues? Anything to look out for?

Cheers,
-Ovx
