Triton as a Tow Vehicle

Hello,

I have an MN Triton dual cab 4wd.  I also looking at getting a forward fold camper in the 1400-2000kg range (once packed).

Our plan is to take it off road.  Nothing to serious, basic beach driving on Fraser Island and Moreton Island and a couple of easy bush tracks.  Plenty of highway road trips as well.

Does anyone have a similar setup?  Does the Triton do a good job of towing this sort of weight?

Maybe hire a camper for a weekend and see how you find it... The only way to really be happy :)

How a car tows a weight is really a personal thing...

Some will say '... the car doesn't even know its there'...
Others will say they are having an epileptic fit changing down gears on hills.

we have a MN + Blue water FF around1800kg get a 14/15 per 100, no drive on sand but HW and tracks into camping around Vic HC

I've got one & either tow a 4.2m tinnie of a lifestyle soft floor basic camper. It's no powerhouse, that's for sure, but it will get you to where you want to go. Mine is around the 15L/100km mark too when towing.
It's a bit like me, pretty doey & loves a drink  ;D

Just been to Fraser with a mate who towed a Kimberley with his Triton. Did everything my cruiser did and never got bogged. These people live in cairns and we're down here for Christmas so they had a load of kids presents on board as well as they were heading straight home after Fraser.

Personally I don't think there is a bad 4x4 out there these days as long as you do all the correct things like tyre pressures etc you will be fine.
As for fuel economy I don't think it was any worse than the cruiser. I'm flat out getting under 20l/100km towing our Kimberley so I wouldn't be concerned that the triton is any more heavier on fuel than other vehicles around.

I no longer have my MN Triton.
It was a 2.5td glxr manual dual cab.
I used for towing a Modcon Imperial FF ( Aussie made).
If you drove it sensibly it would generally return about 12.5l/100ks whilst towing.
It had Ultimate suspension in the vehicle and it handle perfectly whilst towing, the standard suspension is terrible. A suspension upgrade is a must if not already done.
Good spread of power.
The clutch was a little below par for steep stuff whilst towing off road.
If I remember correctly the 3rd to 4th gear spacing was a little broad.
Its a long way back to the towball  so be mindful of ball weight of the camper.
Worst car I have ever owned for reliability and build quality.
Glad to get rid of it.
Sold it and bought an FJ Cruiser
super happy with the FJ.

Had a manual 2013 2.5TD. Used to tow our Penguin -1500kg loaded, and was more than adequate and reliable.

Tried towing our AT11 several times, at 2200kg loaded had a really hard time trying to keep it all together. Weight of trailer just bullied the poor Triton. Struggled uphill with AT11. I wouldn't try taking on Fraser but others may. Have towed a 650kg Cameron soft floor on Fraser, wouldn't like to try something 3 times that weight

Around 12.5lt/100 with Penguin, 15lt/100 with the AT11. 8.3lt/100 not towing (city and Illawarra ) fitted with a RaceChip that had very slight improvement on economy and moved torque curve about 300rpm lower - measured by seat of the pants ;D

IanC on here also sold his Triton after purchasing a Reconn(lighter than AT11) maybe send him a PM too

Got a 2014 mn diesel auto pulling a 2000kg rear fold. Up hills its a slug but that doesn't bother me cause I on holiday and not in a hurry. Otherwise I'm pretty happy with it. I am thinking about getting a wind booster to improve throttle response though.

Yes, I know it's there. Suspension upgrade a must with the 200kg ball weight. Yes, uses more fuel.

Other than that, no dramas!

This email has been on the net a few times.  The same would most likely apply to all makes.  The big question is how far down do you go in towing weights for each type of road surface?

High ball weights combined with heavy gear in the back behind the rear axle flexes the end of the chassis up and down on rough surfaces until it eventually cracks or bends.

Aftermarket suspensions or air bags can not support the far end of the car.  The back goes down, the car pivots on the rear axle and the front is jerked up regardless of the suspension.

Try emailing Mitsubishi and ask for more details on both towing and carrying.  Get everything right and you will have trouble free trips.  Get it wrong and trust an aftermarket suspension to correct everything and you could easily get a lengthy interruption to your holiday and a very expensive repair bill.

Best I have seen on my MN is 7.7 on a highway trip Brisbane to Sydney, made it to Newcastle on less than one tank and I was trying for best economy, so sat on 90 in the left lane.  Generally I get in the 8.5 area on normal highway use, and 9s in the usual some town some highway.  The key is speed, these things have plenty of drag, under 90 fuel usage is amazing over it drops off, sit on 110 and you are into 10s and 11s

My driving style is 'relaxed' Some folks seem to be really hard on their cars, think I'm the opposite. Even when I had company cars I'd get at least 60000 from a set of tires 
8.3  refers to city and Illawarra - normal running around plus freeway daily to and from work at the time in Wollongong I don't have figures for just driving around the 'burbs. Your figures are probably typical I ? Quite liked ours just wasn't up to towing 2T plus of the new trailer. Prior to fitting RaceChip it was around 8.5 but engine was newer/tighter too ?
