Just reading a News article: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-07-03/election-result-what-happens-now/7564250
& mentions:
"There are bound to be disputes over votes and, in seats where it really comes down to the wire, there could be legal challenges.

Sometimes, with postal or absentee votes, it will be "a long and tedious process", Green says, "because the parties will check every name that's come in and check it against their list of who they think that's voted and they'll maybe question a signature here or date of birth on the form".

How the hell do the "parties" know what my signature looks like, or what my DoB is?  ???  >:(

Note that it doesn't say the AEC, it says the (political) parties.

So, what, LNP / ALP have got access to a copy of my driver's licence or similar to check signature etc?

Does anyone know just how the hell this actually works?

The signature you refer to would be the AEC officer signature placed on each voting form as they are handed to the voter. The DoB would be on the details held by the AEC for each registered voter

I think the signature referred to is the signature of the polling booth person who handed out the voting forms as they are required to sign the forms. DoB maybe part of the ID process when registering for the Electral roll, but was a long time ago for me, however the kids quickly got notified when they became eligible to vote.

It was explained on the ABC morning show today, yes, I am at home this week and have no life...

For a postal vote:
You fill in your paper and seal it in an envelope. You then stick that envelope in another envelope, on which you fill in all the boxes so they can find you on the electoral role and sign it to say it was yours. It then all gets sealed in another envelope and that all gets posted.

It arrives at the tally room for your electorate (all have to go to the electorate you are voting in are to be counted).
The outer envelope is opened and discarded.
The middle envelope details are compared against your entry in the role to make sure it is you and that you didn't vote twice.
That envelope is opened and retained as evidence that you voted just in case the result is disputed in court.
The unidentified inner envelope is removed and placed in a container until such time that there is a sufficient sized batch assembled to make counting worthwhile. Then the unidentified inner envelope is opened and the votes counted.

So the chance of them tracing back that it was you that drew a big penis on the senate ballot paper are low.
