With school just finished for good for a lot of a young people, my nephew is looking for an electrical Apprentice in the Geelong/Point Cook area of Vic.
He does a wide variety of things, like home theatre and security installations, but you can get a better idea of the work by visiting his Web Page or FB Page (copy of the apprenticeship ad on there)

NECA (National Electrical Communications Association) have been advertising for weeks in the Sydney papers. Apart from being the industry body for employers they are also a employer of apprentices who then farm them out to host employers. That's where we get ours from, usually around 15 to 20 at the beginning of each year.

Thanks BobnRob. I've forwarded the link to our eldest who's just finished year 12. Looks like your nephew has positioned himself in a very fast growing field.

Good luck to your young bloke mate  :)
Yes, his business has gone ahead in leaps n bounds in the last couple of years. He's gotten himself quite the reputation, with the 'class' of his clientele rising daily it seems  :)

Yeah, the boy applied for this and did their exam which was maths, science etc but didn't get a high enough score to qualify for a position. Unfortunately, complex maths is not his speciality!

When my mate did his electrical apprenticeship (decades ago) he came last at tech for theory but scored 98% for practical and went on to become a great sparky. Unfortunately he left Sydney otherwise I would have put the boy with him. Such is life.

I'm 56, unemployed, and I thought about applying for an electrical apprenticeship ! ( got bucklys of getting one )

Even though I'm an electrical fitter ( not an electrician ! ).. Have a few yrs ago done a tafe course ( cert 3 electrotechnology electrician ), but dept of fair trading wouldn't recognise or marry this cert with my ( and 10 other blokes ) elect fitter trade papers ??

Have worked on mining machinery and other things and on all voltages up to 11,000, but it's like they deem me inexperienced to work on ordinary old houses ??  Go figure ??

No offence to your son but NECA aren't going to offer apprenticeships to people who look like they will fail TAFE on the theory side. It is a big investment in a person and they want a return. The situation you mentioned about your mate is different now as the trade has become very technical. I was similar however my maths was a bit above average and practical was top of the class. I used to get smashed by the electrical commission apprentices, me mid 70s them in the 90s but would cream them in prac. You see the electrical commission held entrance exams and would take the really smart academically kids.
