Large Long Term Tents/Shelters?
« on: December 16, 2015, 07:01:16 AM »
G'day,

We might be in a situation where we need to live out of a tent for 4-6 weeks (one location). There is my wife, 3.5 year old daughter, 2 dogs, and me.

I'ver never really looked at these before - any recommendations?

Bigger the better and under $1500

Cheers,
Peter

Can you hire a camper trailer for that period of time for the same sort of money?

I'd be ringing around the local hire companies and ask the.

Just tell them your going on a road trip.

Better than sleeping on a air bed for a month.

Hunter Valley.

We're about to buy a place up there with nothing on it (40 hectares) and need something to live in for a while until we build a big shed (which we'll camp out of until the house is done)

We've got a few smaller tents, but everything is for touring, not long term stays.....it could blow out to 8 weeks if we have bad weather + Christmas etc

I had one of these until last week... no way on gods earth I could live out of it for more than a week... and that would be stretching it.

What about a shipping container? Not sure on cost but it could be used as a secure lock up after the sheds built and your building the house

Yeah we've got a Southern Cross Touring tent. Its superb.....for touring, not sure I want to live out of it that long. We've done 3-4 weeks touring in it before.

I'm not too concerned about security. It'll just be our camping gear and the place is secluded.

Perhaps we should just go buy the biggest tent we can find and pray its somewhat weather tight.

How about something like this:
http://www.caravancampingsales.com.au/buy/private/SSE-AD-3737320/1984-Viscount-Ambassador?cr=2&category=caravans&psq=%28%28%28%28%28%28SiloType%3DDealer%20Used%7CSiloType%3DDealer%20New%29%7CSiloType%3DPrivate%20Used%29%7CSiloType%3DDealer%20Near%20New%29%26SaleStatus%3D%5BFor%20Sale%5D%29%26State%3DNew%20South%20Wales%29%26Service%3D%5BCaravancampingsales%5D%29&pso=0&pss=Price,
& wack something like a 6m x 6m double carport up over the top. Ensuite tent with a gas HWS & a portaloo under the roof & you'd probably be fairly comfy till you got the shed built. If you site it properly, you may even be able to set it up so that the carport is alongside the new shed?

Worth a thought?

We had a Great Outdoors Hacienda tent for 10 years that we used every year for 6 weeks at a time when we went on our fishing holiday. Quite big, solid, wont blow away, waterproof (2" rain one night) with sewn in floor. Was about $1200 from memory and sold it a couple of years ago for $650.
However, as mentioned above I would be looking at renting a caravan. There must be a few sitting around that you could rent privately for a reasonable fee. I would be putting  some wanted to rent ads in the free online's and in the caravan sections to see what happens.

I can sell you my 12 person tent, cheap. Oz tent villa elite dome. Four separate rooms with zipper walls between, in a T shape.  Big enough for a queen size bed or a couple of kids beds in the rooms at each end of the T.   Use the middle room for a lounge or storage, and turn the front room into dining/kitchen if you want - though I'd honestly be setting up a kitchen under a gazebo for that length of time.

Similar to this,  but ours is a few years old.

Put a big solid tarp over the top for that length of time, to be sure of avoiding leaks.  A tarp underneath to protect the floor, and maybe one inside if you have the dogs inside to stop the floor getting scratched open.

Seriously, couple of hundred dollars for this one.. What a bargain!

That's a very kind offer, thankyou. I'll speak with the boss and see what she thinks.

Yep, we've got a good gazebo, so the kitchen will go under that

Cheers,
Peter
