Emu Camper Trailer
« on: August 22, 2015, 05:24:38 PM »
Hi all,

Hoping someone on here may be able to give a review to a complete newbie...
We have been looking for a while at getting our first camper. Tossing up weather to go 2nd hand or new - yes there are benefits to either/or. Have looked at the 3 letter acronym imports, but recently stumbled across Emu Camper Trailers on the Gold Coast. Doing a search on here I found a couple of people were talking about buying one, but nothing further to that. Has anyone heard anything about them ?
The next question I have is re braking systems. The Emu has "disk brake over-ride system". What are the pros & cons compared to an electric braking system.
Thanks for your help, thoughts and experience.

I don't know much about Emu campers, but can give you my thoughts on the disc over-ride. I've got them in our trailer, they work well but I you can feel it jolting back & forth when you hit bumps.
However, with electric brakes you need to install the controller in every car you tow it with.  About $400-500 I think for a quality unit. We have two cars that was going to tow it.  An extra grand on an entry level camper purchase price.  That drove my decision to go with an o'ride disc system.
Saying that, our next trailer will have electric brakes.  But that will be a more expensive purchase, so the controller won't be such a large portion of the price.
Anyway, that's my two cents.
Enjoy your trailer, whatever you choose & have fun with the mods. :-)
Cheers Dave.

Can't help you with the Emu Camper sorry, but the elec braking system is a preferred system IMO
The over-ride type are mostly only good for hard(ish) braking, dependent on the 'strength' of the internal spring inside the coupling, where as elec brakes are instant when adjusted right  :)
As for the car's controller, these one's from ebay are very popular, and if you're that way inclined, you can save some $$$ installing it yourself  ;)  TEKONSHA Brake Controller
The seller also has a good reputation  :)

I was going to buy an Emu, but then the hot water system blew up on my house... :(

But I've done a lot of research and walked around a lot of campers and for a budget priced unit, they're my pick of the bunch.

We have just racked up almost 50 sleeps in our Emu which we bought almost 2 yrs ago. It's been a good buy for us
