Cape York - driving a petrol
« on: September 11, 2015, 11:07:46 AM »
Is it possible to drive up to Cape York in a petrol GQ, for example?  Do servos sell petrol as well as diesel?  Are there any catches to making such a trip in a petrol 4wd?

You will have no trouble with driving a petrol up the Cape. I drove my 4.5 petrol 100s up there a couple of years ago and had no prob in getting petrol. Just take the usual precaution before water crossings if deep.

We did the Cape 11 years ago and two of the 4WD’s in our group were petrol and they didn’t have any problems. So I’m there are more fuel options now.

Thanks lads. What's the general water crossing precaution besides bra and snorkel, sealing electrics as best as possible? Anything else?  Special hints and tips?

As others have said no drama.
Took the 4.8 to the cape a few years back with spare fuel on the camper but never needed it only for the Genny. Water bra naturally for the deeper crossings that's about it. Snorkel should be mandatory for the cape with any vehicle doing the telly track

Yep, walk it and pick your line. It will depend on when you go and what the wet season was like before hand.  We have just got back, and for me, I think the tele was a walk in the park and have certainly done harder stuff, but if I went in May, i may have a different thought of it.

We did the trip this time last year in a petty Prado, and had no issues in fuelling up...all the roadhouses Archer, Musgrave, Bramwell, Laura all had unleaded available...

Ahh the memories...actually left Sydney this day one year ago for the Cape  8)
