Hema or mudmap

hi all,
I am planning a family trip to the tip for August/sept. Next year. Although I know it is a fairly straight forward run, I was also hoping img to u hitch the trailer and do a few day trips exploring the lesser known gems that the Cape has to offer.
So before I lash out and download an app for the iPad, I was wondering what others had to say about hema and mudmap2.
I am seeking honest, critical opinions, pros and cons to each.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated as it will save me wasting a hundy on something that is Shite.

Yes I had a look, but I'm still left confused. It appears even after you have purchased the app you are required to pay for area specific maps for the Cape. Am I reading this correctly or am I totally wrong and the maps are included

First off, do you have a 3G iPad? If not, you don't have GPS, you'll need to get a GPS dongle.

I don't have either (I use Memory Map with Hema Maps pre-loaded)

There are two HEMA apps available for iPad - Hema 4wd maps and Hema Explorer.

Hema 4WD maps app comes with all maps downloaded. Hema Explorer has some maps, and the rest you pay for and download as you need. If it were me I would get the Hema 4WD map as all the maps are downloaded from the get go.  The explorer app has some other bells and whistles that require intenet connection I believe

A lot of the guys on Pradooint use Hema 4wd Map on iPad. The Hema Explorer App is less favoured but if you have an Android its all you can get.   Mudmaps seems to have gone out of favour since when they went v1 to v2 as they made you pay another $149 to get the new version of the app.

try the memory map app on your ipad. It's free comes with a decent 250k map and some basic tracking and waypoint stuff.

If you have a suitable ipad, It will tell you where you are and you can save tracks.

It's a no cost way of finding out if you really want to get into the whole computer mapping thing. You can spend a fair bit of money and some of the stuff is not for the technological challenged like me.

Purchased a bad elf gps from the above to use withmy iPad, MM and Hema.

Used hema and bad elf on iPad mini with ram suction mount on red centre trip, was very good. Some pluses if you use discounted iTunes vouchers it costs less, you can have it on your phone too if the iTunes account is the same. Worth noting you need to have a cig socket charger that puts out enough juice for iPad and bad elf to keep them charged

Yeah, we did what scott13april said - wait till Dick Smith or Jb or whatever have a 20% off sale on iTunes cards, buy them then, then use them to purchase the app.

We ended up with the Hema 4wd App, which has been bloody good for what we have used it for. (though it turns out that it doesn't show half the tracks in the Benarkin State Forest, and those it does show turn out to be a bloody difficult dead end! - probably due to the constantly changing logging tracks though)

I bought Mud Maps a couple years ago after comparing both. I have used their map converter to put my hema maps on there as well anyway. I also like "The Map" which is a user generated map of Australia with lots of info and its stored on the iPad.
