Lake Eyre April 2015

G'Day everyone.

I am looking at heading to Lake Eyre in April this year.  Looking for any suggestions for places to stay.  Will be taking a rented camper trailer as I'm not real keen on taking my Expanda there.  A bit worried I will hit some rough road and rattle the poor thing to bits.  Looking forward to your feedback on where the wife, 4 kids and I should stay/see.  Thanks in advance.  Kirky. :cheers:

There is a few good places to stay.
Farina ruins
Coward Springs
William Creek CP
Lake Eyre itself (Halligan Bay) however it can get quite windy there. The track out from Oodnadatta Track to Halligan Bay can get very rough.

Did that trip a couple of years ago.

Farina and behind pub at Marree are good easy camps on the way.

For Halligan Bay, I would suggest camp at Coward Springs (we went to a night and stayed a week) and day trips.

Oodnadatta track is generally very easy however as stated Halligan Bay can be very rough

Another option for seeing Lake Eyre is from Level Post Bay via Muloorina Station. You turn right off the Oodnadatta Track a couple of km out of Marree, then head North along the graded road from there. 
Campsites are spread out under trees beside the Muloorina Waterhole on the Frome river. There are flush toilets, but no showers, and you need to bring your own water.
There is a lot of birdlife here, and also a natural artesian bore water 'pool'. It's like a little dam with a silty bottom (nothing flash like at Coward Springs or Mungerannie) but it is soothing.
It's a nice drive from here up to Lake Eyre, passing Lake Eyre South along the way.

Muloorina Station asks for a donation for the RFDS as your camping fee, and there's a self registration/donation box as you drive in. We stayed here because we were travelling with our dog, and couldn't access Lake Eyre from the William Creek side with her. It is NP at the Lake edge on this side too, but we were able to keep her in the carpark while we walked the 50m or so to see Lake Eyre.

Like everyone else has mentioned, Coward Springs is a favourite. It's a little oasis along the track and the kids will love it.

The road up to Lake Eyre was well graded when we went through in 2013, but we could just have been lucky.

Having been to both Halligan Bay and Level Post Bay, I have to say that I much prefer staying at Muloorina Station and heading into Level Post Bay. From memory a nicer track, great camping area and less bleak than Halligan Bay. Back in the early 90's the overflow creek at Mulloorina was quite extensive and special, now, as described it's more of a singular pool. Still refreshing though!

As has already been said, the track out to Halligan Bay can be quite rough. We smashed a camper battery on the way out in 2011 and the wind, ohh the wind. We thought we weren't going to survive the night but we did and it was all worth it. I would do it all again tomorrow.

Hello again everyone.  Well its now looking a lot like Coward Springs for us, you have all talked me into it.  Really looking forward to the trip now and we are right into the planning.  I will try and get some photos on when we get back.  Does anyone have advice on the best place to rent a satellite phone and any other tips for the trip?  Does anyone have any tips on tyre pressures for the Oodnadatta track and Halligan Bay Track?  Thanks everyone.
