Off to the Flinders
« on: February 02, 2015, 08:36:51 AM »
We are soon off the the Flinders.  Any recommendations on campsites or tips would be very welcome.  We have camper trailers x 2 and are four adults travelling from Sydney.  How do you book the National Park campsites??

Fortunately it's not like Queensland and you don't have to book National Park campsites  :cup:
We got a month long camping pass for all the National Parks in SA which was great value. There's some great "free camping" throughout the Flinders,we loved Aaroona  Ruins and Parachilna Gorge

G'day, if you're coming along the Barrier Hwy & up through Peterborough, once through Cradock you'll get to a "T" junction - Quorn to the left - Hawker to the right. You need to go right, but if you take a very short detour left, you'll come across the Yourambulla Caves Aboriginal rock art site just a few hundred metres from the "T" junction, on the right. it's a moderate climb, but very well worth the visit!

Sacred Canyon - I loved it, some others thought it was over rated.

Dairy Farm Rd, just out of Hawker on the Leigh Creek Rd from Hawker - there are some great views from the top!

Jarvis Hill Lookout out of Hawker - As above!

Drives - Check this thread: http://www.myswag.org/index.php?topic=41148.0

Plus, if you can, I'd thoroughly recommend climbing Rawnsley Bluff!

There's heaps more, but how much time do you have?

Warraweena, North Flinders, plenty of history (ruins and 4wd tracks ranging from easy to medium) You must book though, very few sites and very popular. Non powered sites. Call Stoney http://www.warraweena.com/
40km south of Leigh Creek, Shopping Centre and Fuel.
You travel via back tracks from Blinman to Warraweena instead of the hwy. Ensure your prepared though.

Bendleby Ranges, South Flinders, surrounding history (ruins and 4wd tracks ranging easy to medium) You must book, very few sites and very popular. Non powered sites. http://www.bendlebyranges.com.au/
1.5hr south of hawker. 1hr North of Orroroo Shopping Centre Fuel
Easy back dirt roads/tracks from Bendleby to 10 km's south of Hawker.

Merna Mora, Central Flinders, surrounding history (ruins and 4wd tracks easy) powered and non powered sites. You must book.
 http://www.mernamora.com.au/
40km north of Hawker (local store and fuel)

These are all working stations and booking is essential.

Just to name a few good ones at the top of my list, there are many more

If you're heading further south, non tourist back tracks east of Mt Bryan which is 1/2 north of Burra, a few hidden ruins in the valleys, better than tourist ruins.
