Those miniture jump start packs.

Those Jump pack things, about the size of a vegemite sandwich that can jump start a 4WD, charge ya phone, run ya computer a make a vibrator shake like its never shaked before etc etc, do they really work?

I have trouble coming to grips with the concept, but I do understand teck-know-ledgy has changed a bit....a lot maybe...  ???

They work. Bought one for my son and we have used it a couple of times to jump sort his little Getz when he was awa and hadn't used it for a number of months.

I will be getting one for my wife's car soon as well for when I am away.

i was skeptical too.
But purchased one from Battery world, [$199 i think] SJS 600 amp
Jump started a ford ranger on fraser & a few fork lifts, work great.
Its also handy to recharge your computer rather than buy just the computer charge lead for $50.

Just need to watch what amps they are.

Some are for sedans etc then there are bigger ones (amps) for 4x4/trucks

I believe after having one of the battery ones that now you would be better of with a battery-less one like this capacitor discharge one.

The battery ones only have a certain life this capacitor discharge one would last a lot longer. And no I don't have one as yet but will be replacing my battery one with this when it has past away.

Bought mine from RV Green on this site.
Works a treat. Started the Colorado from dead flat out at Maree.
Beats carrying around the big heavy jump start kit.

How do they work?
My thinking is that modern vehicles sense battery voltage and when under a certain level the starter relays dont kick in.
The magic boxes trick the car to think the battery voltags is higher and they try to start on lower voltage.
If you used it on a dead US flat battery do they still work?
Otherwise they could do away with normal batteries and just put in the magic boxes.
Am I missing something or are they really a black art?

I think (not sure) they are just made up of high drain lithium 18650 batteries, probably capable of pretty much discharging in a few seconds so can then give the boost needed but wont last for long

That's exactly all they are. Just a high drain Lithium based battery pack...

You can only crank something around 5 seconds and then must rest them before next attempt..

It's a small high current shot - think of it like an adrenaline shot to your battery/starter

 According to some online reviews they don't think they have many cycles in them (15-20)

Instructions on ours

To Jumpstart a vehicle.

1.       Connect the cables to the jumpstarter

2.       Connect the cables to the battery, red to positive and black to earth/negative

3.       Start your vehicle (this jumpstarter is suitable for vehicles up to 3.5L petrol and 2L diesel)

4.       Remove the cables from the jumpstarter first, then red and black as soon as possible after starting your car.

5.       If the car does not start within 3 attempts, please stop jumpstarting as there may be other reasons for the vehicle to not start.

I too was a sceptic till I saw one used on a flat 1HZ cruiser diesel. Blew my mind !

It might jump start the Jeep, and might even re charge your phone, computer, hearing aids, Cpak machine and stuff.  But F### really Kev, It will never give enough power to start that vibrator of yours mate.    ;D

The ones we sell at work "Thunder" have been great, 6 months storage time with out discharge, started 2 VDJ79's and a 1HD on one charge.

We used one yesterday on a dead flat (no solenoid click or anything) BT50 - it didn't work. Ended up using two batteries to jump start it.

The second BT50 would click but not turn over. Jump started this one off the Cruiser.

The common theme was BT50's, maybe the parkers always coming on with doors etc.

Not sure what size the lithium power pack was.

Is that the Thunder Part No.  TDR02011?
 Bloke from Ashdowns dropped a pamphlet off the other day with a heap of Thunder gear in it, and I was eyeing one off myself.
