Off road vs on road rims.
« on: November 07, 2013, 05:51:24 PM »
As the question says is there a difference? We have 22" wheels on our explorer and have been using the car a bit more off road going camping as we need 2 cars with the camper and bike trailer. Car still runs highway tyres. Want to get som a/t or m/t to fit. Do they make them that big only want 31" maybe I say maybe 33". Problem is will my current rims be up to going off road. Not hardcore just fire trail type stuff. Want off road tyres for hopefully a bit more sidewall between the rim and ground and a bit more puncture resistant plus better grip.

Buy a cheap set of original 16 inch rims for the exploder and fit some decent all terrains.  Use these when you go camping.

No point in using your existing highway combination off road and expecting them to perform. Anything above 17 is unsuitable for anything but blacktop IMO, and no/limited off road tread type options. The lack of sidewall depth to prevent fractures and give rim protection will get you every time when you least need it.

The rim itself wont break as such as it still physically has to hold the weight of the car but......

You will virtually have no chance of fiding a performance tyre for a rim that size and you run the risk of cracking / bending the rim due to the tyre having such a low profile.

If you just want 1 set there are some what i would call lighly agressive all terrains coming out for 18 inch rims such as the cooper tyre offering so you could pair these up with a set of 18 inch rims if you just wanted one set

My Touareg had 18" wheels and choices in AT were limited and expensive.    It would be cheaper to buy 16" wheels plus tyres than find 22" off road tyres.

I've ditched my 19" and got 17" with 265x70s far better to air down if I want better traction in the soft stuff, I use them all the time. ;D
