trying hard to figure if it is viable for us to come along, so wondering what people are budgeting for the trip? If its not to personal a question. Im thinking most of the cost would be on petrol, then camp fees, then food. Would also be a pre trip cost in making sure the vehicle and camper are in top shape.

Hey folks this is when a practice or reconnaissance trek is a great idea: if you know how much fuel your vehicle uses for a (for instance) 400km trek, you can budget for a 4000 or 40,000km trek over similar terrain, based on your figures

Keep in mind remote areas charge a LOT more for fuel - others may know recent prices...?

Food - you need to eat at home, so that is not a 'cost' as such, but you will need to take the bucks with you, of course.

And if you want to be really thorough, add the cost (as you mentioned) of a service and tyre wear, too

I do believe there is some theory to $ per klm.. cant remember what it is.

If your unsure if you can afford it, you probably will be doing it tight and not enjoy it as much cause you cant do the side trips... I've been in this boat.

Its a long way to go to miss out.

Dont forget a few grand in the bank incase something goes really pearshaped like a gearbox or something and you need major repairs.

Don't forget to factor in entry passes, for instance there is a mandatory fee for Uluru.
Add 20-30% to the price of fuel in town.
Pays to get a service to the vehicle prior to the trip.
Budget for a 'spares' kit.
Budget for some 'emergency' cash, just in case.

ok budget done. Just in case there are others curious like I was, this is what we will need if we were to do the trip. drum roll.........$4780.
This includes one return flight for my partner who cant take more than two weeks off work.
It includes plenty of extra kms and working off an average of petrol being $2 per litre.
Includes all fees and touristy things and food.
On top of this we would have emergency cash just in case.
we would be coming from Melbourne, and may take an alternative route there or home again, this is also factored in.

so now we will wait and think about it. Because I have been known to rush into things.

Your food is something you can determine the cost of , what do you eat at home . Allow $2 per liter + on fuel at 20 l/100km .
l did last month 6400km Central Vic to Alice  home via Chambers Pillar /Lamberts Center  at 27c /KM average . Best part of 5K for the trip . We didn't skimp on the sides  . lts what you make it

Over our trips 1 of those being 5 months away we have found the following formulas hold pretty true

$800 per week or $1 per km travelled

This included everything
Food
Fuel
Booze
Caravan park or camping fees
Entry permits
and a bit left over for a nice dinner a tour or something similar

I also take out RACV top cover and normally then have about 3k in the bank for emergency repairs or if something goes wrong that we need to jump on a plane. Another one overlooked if we are going remote for a month or longer we will both go and get a medical before departure as i have had one trip end due to a foot infection that came with me that some antibiotics before i left would have solved

if your going to get other peoples budget advice, it may be best to check how many people are in their vehicle on their trip when they give you information, the differance between 2 people travelling alone versus 2 adults and 2 kids certainly adds up quickly. simple things like camp costs at some locations are surprisingly different when you start adding a couple of kids into the equation, then factor in your feeding 2 more people, and then it could come down to someone with kids needing to add stuff onto their roofrack also due to a lack of room inside the vehicle, which then effects your fuel economy more aswell.

it's all good Chester.... i just know from past experience when going away camping with my 4wd club, that one persons idea of a cheap place to camp, can be very different to what it has cost my family to camp at the same location or even someone with more then 2 kids, so best to give the OP a heads up on that sort of information. for all i know the OP may only be 2 people only like yourself was

I agree mate i pity the families with 3 or more kids now most of the van parks seems to now charge per person rather than per site
