to keep the triton or go for a patrol or cruser????
« on: November 10, 2013, 04:14:14 PM »
Hi all,

I currently own a 2011 triton glxr. Stock as a rock. The dilemma I am in is weather to stark spending coin on it (bar, canopy, lift, roof rack, and tyres) or whether to sell it and buy a 2nd hand patrol or 100 series???

The triton is great on fuel, but like that the other two are a little more off road capable. Id like to go diesel but they are worth a bucket load more for a reasonable one. Is anyone using petrol patrols or crusers???? If so how are they with creek crossings? I am under the impression the triton would suffer with all the electronics they have these days, am I correct?

Ant input would be great

Diesels have electronics just like petrols so much of a muchness.

Generally only an issue if you don't prepare the vehicle for the crossing or get stuck. Avoid water like the plague - 4wds are not submarines and water stuffs lots of mechanicals.

You are on the right track with a petrol patrol or landcruiser.   There are some great bargains out there. For my money it would be a stock 4.8 patrol and I would add a snorkel, Bilsteins and king springs.

Sequential LPG if you are doing more than 20k a  year.

Forget bar work unless you can't drive. LOL. keep an eye out for front and rear factory bumpers to match the car and put them in the shed if u do crunch one.

Replace the side steps with sliders when u crunch one.

I had a 100series 4.5 petrol manual with a 2" ARB lift and loved it.  Patrol is stronger in the drive line so is stronger but is yrs behind in noise vibration harshness.

Have fun.

You do have a good point there, I just thought I might be able to sell it and get something a little older that I don't mind getting a few dents and scratches on. But then again is that worth the risk of getting something older and breaking down on a trip

Your GLXR should have  a rear diff locker and traction control plus super select box so more than off road capable,Unless the 2011 model didnt come with those as standard

We went from a ml triton that was well decked out to an 01 hdj100 and couldn't be happier with our decision but they are different vehicles.  Manual to auto, we find the auto better for our use, ute to wagon there is a larger difference? I was not so keen to carry the styrofoam bait box on our last trip in the wagon as it burst one trip when we had the ute, a different outcome if that had happened on carpet........
The wagon is a lot more comfortable but that is a leaf/coil thing and we had aftermarket suspension on the triton. The cruiser has a lot more room which makes it more comfortable for us and the kids and the driving position for my wife and I is a lot better. Our other car is a Forester which my wife always took and was the preferred family car, the forester is hardly driven now we have the cruiser and I rarely get the keys for it....
The cruiser uses slightly more fuel around town (13 l compared to 11 l per 100k) and less when towing than the triton did with the triton up to 18 litres not to mention carbon build up.

This is a state of mind. Every vehicle is new at some point, what does it matter who or when the scratches are derived/originated from?? Have to agree with previous comment> why go "backwards" in vehicle? Your triton will be a superior on road vehicle and no worse off road. Changing vehicles is a sure fire way to lose coin, so unless your current ride can't do what you need it to them think long and hard before discarding it. The other vehicles are top off road product but are both getting on in age. Personally I would stick with what u have until your finances allow a current model vehicle if absolutely must change.

if your concerned with dints and scratches, then flog it while its new and worth good money..  Beat up cars aren't worth ****, and newer cars with their alfoil bodies tend to dint and scratch by looking at them.

an 80/100 or GQ/GU would shit on the triton offroad.

YMMV

How many KM's has the Triton done? If its done over 90,000 its a good time to get rid of it as they start costing money. A older diesel Patrol or Cruiser is a step forward not back. New CRD's are rubbish.

If you are going to do some serious touring, you really need a diesel.  I've been to a few places where you can't buy petrol!

My son in law bought a V8 Landcruiser 100 series and got 460km out of his 180 litres of fuel around town and promptly sold it when he realised how limiting  his touring range would be. I did warn him!

I recall another offroad trip when a petrol Triton driver got 60 L /100 km any retired from the day trip early as he did not have a full tank at the start of the day.
