Firstly a thanks for this forum, its been very informative.

We're currently looking at purchasing a camper. Requirements are that its light (less than the 900kgs that our car can tow), can do off road duties as required and is both comfortable and quick to setup.

After looking at building a teardrop and deciding that as much as we love the concept, we've been won over by a hard floor camper. Whilst very keen on the pricing of the Chinese versions, we've become quite keen on a Cub Daintree LE with a couple of upgrades.

After looking at the Cub and getting a quote I have a couple of Q's from owners.

- Is there something that you missed out on ordering but wished you did at a later date? We've had a quote on the battery pack, inner spring mattress upgrade and the 12 volt pump for the sink rather than the hand pump. They suggested that they'd throw in the tropical roof.

- The rear stabiliser legs on the camper are just tube with a lock bolt and foot welded on, I notice that the top of the line Cub has Alko drop down versions, would these be a better option over the standard fare or its just something that you never have issues with and I'm being picky. The sales guy said they the alko's were overkill for that Daintree and would take longer to setup that the normal legs.

- The battery pack seems quite exxy for $1250. To me its like $500 or less worth of not the best quality parts. Is this a pretty simple upgrade to wire in yourself?

We have a SWB Jeep Wrangler as a tow car. As this only has a 90kg ball weight we've been advised to take off the large box and jerry can holders on the drawbar, so we don't overload the camper. We have an average size Engel fridge and I'm thinking that with all that gone, we could get a fridge box instead (Which to be honest would suit us more) with that we can only add the weight that the fridge can carry so would be ok. Can you get these boxes off the shelf from somewhere, preferably not made of aluminium chequer plate (I really hate the stuff).

I fitted wind down steadies and they work a treat. Strong enough to lift the corner if I ever need to change a wheel in a pinch. But only then mind you. 

I should have got the drivers side access door fitted.

If you have any electrical savvy fit your own gear. If not take it to a good auto elec and get them to fit the gear you want installed.

Firstly, Welcome to The Show Guys.

I would definitely get a 12v system, they are not that hard to set up or if you have a mate, a couple of slabs of  can work wonders. We went with an inner spring mattress as longer trips can be an issue with a foam one, 12v water pump - yes, Tropical roof - depends on what/where you intend travelling. Definitely if you are heading to [or live in] QLD etc.

The Alco are better [as the extra $$'s shows] but as for them being slower for set up, I don't think so!

We have added a travel awning to both our CT's [much lighter than the full annex] and great for overnight stops.

With a small ball weight, you might be best to try & get as much as you can in the Jeep, if you add anything to the CT, make sure it is over the axle [or slightly behind it]. That said, tread plate is lighter than steel but steel can easily be painted to any colour you want.

Welcome to MySwag Cathy and Darryl,
The Alko wind-down legs suite well to assist in leveling out the hardfloor campers. A few more bits of timber in the toolbox helps out when camping on un-level ground. As Snow said, they are handy to lift up the trailer to change wheels. I used this method only today on my brothers CT. I replaced his shockies and had to remove the wheels from both sides for this process. I love the quick setup of the hardfloor but that is just m opinion.

The one mod I ordered was the drivers side door,well worth it . The battery seems expensive but does include the battery charger etc,I think was worth it in the end.

Welcome to the forum, can't help you with any answers on the Cub as i've never owned one............ can say though that i have seen a few and reckon they look like a good thing, also reassuring is they have been churning out CT's for decades, so they must be doing something right.

welcome to the group, the corner slide down poles work ok, I cant remember ours slipping, and you can put them down later when you have flipped the top  if yo have forgotten, but dont forget or it might flip.

when we traveled aust we had a fridge in the camper and a fridge in our rig and still didnt have enough room.
the 12 v kit, although we never had that option back when i ordered one, might be worth it,  cos we had lots of battery problems, usually flat most of the time, and if we had a battery charger at the start of our trip then things might have been a lot better.
so think long and hard about it, especially if you are going to travel around aust and or do BIG trips. but I dont know much about them, so I hope you get great advice about them from this group.

so as far as the rear legs go, save weight and stay with the standard pole legs, they work ok.

When we were looking at various campers the cub was one of them, but no battery pack, so I got a bit upset with them and they agreed to throw it in at no cost, so it makes you wonder, if you can't get it for free then do as Snow suggests and go to an auto lecky, and get what you want and possibly save money at the same time.

A question people...

Been having a bit of a look around, and have discovered the smaller UEV 345/330 campers. Always looked at their displays at the various shows but tend to only look at the 490 and move on for some reason, disregarding the smaller versions.

Pricing of the smaller UEV's is ok and I love the packaging and they appear to be well specced. However, when comparing to Cub Offroaders, I'm a little put off by the soft floor and more tent like accommodation of the UEV's.

Any opinions?
