Hints and Tips
« on: September 13, 2013, 07:41:21 PM »
Not sure if this has been done before, but what about some old time hints and tips that our grandfathers, fathers, mothers etc used when they were camping.
When dad didn't have any ice, he used to grab a handful of course salt, throw it in a bucket, half fill with water and put in a few beers. Half hour later, nice cold beers.
I can still sort of picture the old Carbide Lights too, but can't remember how they were made.

When I was young , yes many moons ago, we would camp on the Barwon River near Brewarrina NSW using gas mantle lights, big canvas tents and used an old ice chest to keep the fish fresh by gutting them and letting them dry out and pack them with gum leaves as the sap would  preserve  the fish for ages.

Drinking hot lemonade and food was in packets as we had no refrigeration. The toilet was a big hole with a drum and toilet seat, big piece of cardboard to offer privacy and a container of ash used to cover the business.

We used a big drum heated on the fire for shower water and had another drum with a shower nozzle suspedend from a tree with rope that had notches that could would be used for people with certain heights. There was a nail in a tree that the rope notches would hook up to.

The good old days. Loved it.

Real billy tea in an old Sunshine Milk Tin boiled on the side of a fire, then throw some tea leaves in and let sit for a few minutes.   :cup:

We always rolled our sleeping bags up from the top during the day so snakes wouldn't get in, and jamb a rolled up sock in the top of your shoes/boots at night to keep creepy crawly's out

Sol says his Dad didn't have any ice to begin with................
Why do people ask "What the hell were you thinking?"
Obviously I was thinking I was going to get away with it and not have to explain it....

I have never tried burning cow dung, but I have burnt the black boys grass trees to keep the mozzies away. The black boy when burning puts out a sweet /pleasant smell and it does work. This method was used by aborigines all over Australia, and a bloke in Cooktown who does walks/talks on tribal things from his area still burn the black boy sap at some of his stops where he shows some tribal paintings.
