Carrying portable solar panels on a Jayco Camper
« on: June 04, 2013, 07:52:36 PM »
Just wondering how other Jayco owners who use portable solar panels carry them whilst in transit? I have a folding set and currently carry them inside the camper but would like to make a mount for them just not sure of the right spot yet.

Cheers Shaun

Hi Tossie

I had the same problem when I bought them I thought they would lay on the rear mattress but the canvas push up stay put a stop to that idea so when I built a bit of a storage for the back of the patrol a put in a shelf for them to lay in out of site and nothing else can damage then  ehsc

Thanks ehsc. Is your storage a removable item from the Patrol or is it permanent? You have started the noggin ticking!

I pulled apart my 160w portable kit and made them into removable roof mounted 80w panels.  Panels just slide into some aluminium channel.  Leave them on the roof if camped in the open, or pull them off to use as portables if in the shade.

See here on the build. http://www.myswag.org/index.php?topic=26657.msg459139#msg459139

Cheers Kylarama that is similar to what I have had in mind but I want to keep my panels as a folding set so will be slightly harder due to thickness.

Hi Tossie
The way I did its not without unscrewing the top tray ect ,but if you made it so it fits through the rear doors in one piece It would only mean undoing the two bolts on the rear seat mounts that I bolt it to.

The last design I had was just a box out of ply that the panels slide into then I just sat the fridge on that it just layed in the back on the floor it was about 80mm high and 750mm wide hope info helps

G'day tossie,

We place our folding panels in a bag on the table when it's folded down. They don't move around.
It's a great place for them and are always packed ready to go.

Cheers Ryan

Yeah Ryan that is where I carry them now but would prefer to mount them permanently on the outside of the camper as I use them when camper is in between trips for keeping the battery topped up because camper is stored away from electricity

Cheers Tossie

We carry one of ours in a frame on the roof rack.
