How big is to big a trailer in the bush.
« on: May 31, 2013, 04:11:46 PM »
How big a trailer is to big in the bush? Reason i ask is i now have a 7x5 trailer and have 6 and will one day be 7 bikes 2 fit on it. I can comfortably fit 4 on it at the moment and i guess if i throw a bike on the drawbar i could the other 2 but then i lose the space for a toolbox etc. i've given up on trying to fit them on the camper as its not ever gonna happen so need the second trailer. Was thinking of maybe extending its length maybe a foot or 2 but i dont want something to hard to manouvre in the bush as it will be dragged along with us whe we go away sometimes.

where do you wanna go mate?

I've got a 7 x 5 which is too big for some places in the Vic High Country.

weight can be an issue too, make sure it's got electric brakes and good muddy tyres - it'll push the back of the 4x4 around too much in the wet if you don't

no specific place mate. Most places i'll be going to are easily accessible with a trailer such a bylong 4wd park. There will be times though when we go for trips away for an extended period with the camper and bikes on the other trailer. As those times i dont like to travel the blacktop most of those trips will be going through state forests, national parks etc so dont want something thats gone be completely useless in the bush when it comes down to manouvering. The trailer itself isnt that heavy and would imagine even with the bikes it would still come in  under 750kgs. My bike is the heaviest at 108kg. it will be fitted with overide brakes eventually as the trailer will be towed by 3 different vehicles and only on will be fitted with an elec brake controller.

its 7x5 now so if i can make them fit somehow i will but i gotta be mindful of weight distribution as well as simply fitting all the smaller bikes on the drawbar might throw my towball weight over.

How would the bikes go be stood width wise across the trailer. The trailer is 2.1m from gaurd to guard. i would still have to extend the trailer width wise to the edge of the guards to get the bikes on. My bike where the front and rear tyre touch the ground is roughly 1.8m. The bike length itself is 2.2m. Will this work you reckon it will easily fit the bikes on the trailer this way end to end.

I have a 7x5 trailer, which is used for bikes, 3 in fact, I have know idea how you could fit 5 bikes on a 7x5 trailer, unless of coarse 3 are very small, I struggle with 3, 1 TTR250, 1 XT225, 1 CRF230, our 7x5 weighs around 300 to 350kg and with 3 bikes on and gear is about 800kg, how many of the bikes are full size(ie) Moto X, Enduro type bikes?

A 7x5 trailer will go most anywhere in the bush, most fire trails can handle a fire truck, so car and 4WD should be fine, our camper is 9x5, so 7x5 for us is a piece of cake, turning around and very steep or steep and rutted tracks are the major concern.

When towing you have to make compromises and plan ahead a bit more.

I can fit 4 bikes on at the moment. A yz450, wr250, crf80 and xr 80 easily enough. The 2 big bikes on the outside and the 80s end to end in the middle fit well. At the moment my twins have quads which i throw on top of the tent but will be unable to do so once we upgrade them to pw50's or the equivelant other brand.  So will need to fit on the trailer. They should fit on sideways easy enough but worried bout how much they will stick out. Well mainly my bike.  Draw bar would be easy for the 50's but extra weight and space used then as i'd like a toolbox on the front. Maybe 2 smaller toolboxes on the back of the trailer rear of the guards to even the weight.
