Cape York - police enforcing alcohol restrictions
« on: May 16, 2013, 10:49:54 AM »
Just a heads up...a local on another forum has said that the police have been searching vehicles up on the Cape for excessive alcohol.

They have been handing out fines and confiscating the alcohol as well, so it may be a good idea to check where the restrictions apply, and what the limits are.

Different communities have different limits, and some communities are completely dry.

You can check the individual community's restrictions here: http://www.datsima.qld.gov.au/atsis/everybodys-business/alcohol-restrictions-for-travellers

When we went up therein Aug '07 we carefully studied the now much & where guides.  For the most partwe could take what we wanted as long as we were just travelling through a region. From about north of the Jardine River, there was a strict limit to the number and strength of the beer/wine. So we packed the surplus in boxes, pulled up on the side of the road. Took a GPS position, and stashed the surplus supplies well off the road, to collect on the way back!  ;D

We did the same in 2008 , 8 cartons. This was before we came into the restriction zone which is a couple of klms after the ferry.

Stashing it in the bush certainly beats throwing it away. On our Cape trip two years ago we stood inside the shop at the Jardine ferry and watched a group pour six bottles of unopened spirits on a tree out the front i almost cried. I took only what i was allowed although some locals told me that as we were staying at Punsand we could have got away with the bonfide traveller excemption. Not sure how true that was as i wasn't taking any risks. Good to see the authorities enforcing the Law.
