It was worth checking, have you done yours?

Had a bit of a quiet day yesterday, so went and pulled the bearings out of the camper for a check up.

When we bought it nearly a year ago, the seller had a receipt for the bearings being packed about 12 months earlier by a trailer mob in Hervey Bay, so i felt pretty safe on the two trips to Fraser we did with it.

Anyway, wheels off, hubs off, bearings out and all looked good, EXCEPT ONE SEAL.
Washed up everything and even after doing 4 million creek crossings etc on the island, all was good.
I repacked the bearings and shot off to Gympie for new seal and was a bit surprised to find it was just a Falcon seal.  ???

I got told that nearly every camper trailer uses 'em.

A bit of dicking around, but worth it to make sure i've got peace of mind when we shoot off to Agnes Water soon.

We should be going next week, but due to THINGS, we'll get there later than sooner, but late May or June.

So anyway, go check ya wheel bearings if ya haven't done it in a while.   :cheers:

Good advice.

They tend to be an out of sight, out of mind thing, until they play up.........usually at the most inconvenient time/place....

What sort of seal did they give you?

I've found that the seals with the rubber coating on the casing can work their way out of the hub, and the seals with the bare metal casing stay in place. I prefer the marine type, now.

Just my experience....

Yep always a good idea to go over them. Always easier in your own space (or JK's nice workshop) Than on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere!

It can be handy to also if you are replacing them with new ones keep the olds ones in a zip lock bag in the tool box all greased up just in case something bad happens.
Or even if not replacing them just a spare set inc seals, split pins and dust covers.

After reading the topic name, and knowing you'd written it Jeepers, I nearly didn't read this because I thought it was about men's business ;) ;D

Hubby checks/re-packs/replaces etc... ours before each trip, though that didn't stop our little camper mishap last year up on the Cape.

Have a great trip. Another admirer of Agnes Water...and 1770 :cup:

what did the post-mortem tell you about the seal? Was it a quality or installation problem?

When they're off again next time, seeing as though you drive through a bit of water, (or for anyone else who drives through water), grab a couple of speedy sleeves from a bearing shop and fit over the seal surface on the axle. This gives you a stainless surface for the seal face to run on, so when water enters under the dust lip on the seal and is trapped between that and the oil seal lip, it won't rust the surface and tear the seal. (Rust on the seal surface is why most seals fail)

You'll need a piece of exhaust pipe offcut to install them.

Check the trailers bearings each time leading up to a trip.... Agnes and 1770 great spots loved the place... can just see it now !! Jeepers wobbling all over the road on an easy rider style chopper moped blowing his umm / the  horn, with thirty others loaded with back packers  as they go past the camping grounds at 1770 up to the look out..  Got to get us a photo of that Jeepers pleaaaasssseeee. LOL.

The seal was hard and brittle and a bit broke off. the other seal was really good, so i think someone has replaced only one once before.

Only 5600 klms since I did mine so they can wait till 10,000.
Just replaced the "U" bolts and fish plates though before the trip last week to Cunnamulla
