Any wet fossickers

Hi All

Ive been wet fossicking, panning sluicing etc for a year or so, something to do camping. Anybody else fossick gold or gems?

It's been an interest of mine for some time but am yet to pursue it, just no time  ::)

Would dearly love a metal detector and to make myself a sluice one day.

Yes Pauly,

I always wear my Australian Sapphire from Tomahawk Creek (near Emerald in case you didn't know). 

Mum and Dad got me into the whole fossicking thing although I haven't done it for a few years now.  I love being "on the dig" as they called it with zero facilities.  Guess that's where I got my love of bush camping. 

The last gem that they got was a yellow Sapphire which we dubbed The Rock.  It was HUGE!  Mum had it cut and set along side some WA diamonds and it's just gorgeous!  Just a tad HUGE on the finger for my liking though.

We've panned for gold here and there, been to Mud Tank NT (zircons and garnets), tried our hand for opals, topaz, amethyst, quartz, and fossicked the odd fossil (trilobites) or mineral oddity (maltese crosses) here or there.  I've spent alot of time "specking" and found the odd beauty.  I've still got to do anything with my finds.

Although it's hard work, I think it's good fun to come home with something (read: Anything) that shows you've been somewhere other than suburbia!

Did as a kid for years out Sofala and Hill End ways... never made it rich.

Done a bit of fossicking and much washing around Emerald, Safire and the wilows in Qld and panning for gold when we have the water, otherwise have brought bags of dirt home and panned it there. Also have done a bit for opals around Lightning Ridge.

Good to see a few more do it. Weve found some Sapphires Garnets and I get gold most times I head out, never a huge amount though. I havent done any detecting mines always in the water.

What have you guys found.

G'day Pauly,  I have done quite a lot over the years, started back in 61 or 62 in the mountains near and in Kangaroo Valley NSW.  When I found myself on my own in 85 I got pretty seriouse about it went to Lightening ridge for 6 years, realy loved the lifestile,  then 3 years at Clermont then to Rubyvale QLD. couldn't take to town living at Clermont and didn't like detecting, realy loved Rubyvale but after 6 years I got married again and moved into Emerald [ now in Mackay] The things we do for love . Have fossicked all over Qld found some realy good Amathyst west of Bowen and a good amount of opal at Opalton and some good Garnet at Fulerton River field.
  I hope you find this of interest as I realy enjoyed everything about the game.

Hi, I mainly do gold prospecting but will dig for any pretty rocks. Spent 3 weeks at Ruby vale, loved it, going back for 3 months this time in winter. Dug up a few agates and garnets around the South Burnett. I have a Minelab Eureka gold which I haven't found any gold with yet, plenty of junk, a few coins and other relics. I been doing a fair bit of panning and using the mackirk river sluice.  ;D Mick
