I have noticed on that there have been a few grumpy posts, serious action by the mod team and some general unrest through the ranks as of late.

Which has led me to do some thinking? (Yes before anyone asks it was a little painful)
How about introducing a nominal fee to join? Say $5-$10? To be introduced after say 5 posts or so, to give a prospective member a feel for the forum? Then after that full privileges to the trader area and such. Also as a bonus with the small fee you could get a myswag sticker. Which would solve the other dilemma i noticed. On the southern 80 weekend down in echuca I would have seen around 40 cars with campers in tow. I thought I recognized a couple but with no stickers I wasn't sure.
The fee could also help pay for all the website costs and such? I would be happy to pay it if I actually had a good idea for once  ;D

Anyway just a thought guys and gals.

I think it has been discussed back when we had the server issues and it wasn't the way the owners wanted to go.

I dont think having to pay to join would be the right way to go either, I have seen it with fishing forums and even though it wasnt much I didnt join because there are plenty of good free fishing forums.

Some dirtbike forums have a 'membership' arrangement where you pay a fee and get a sticker/t-shirt/some extra privileges in return or they get suppliers on board who offer a decent discount to certain membership levels.

If I owned my swag, which I obviously do not, I would definitely have a membership program set up to help pay for the server but I would never charge to join or do the ad's thing.

You get that from time to time. Its all a part of the ride.  8)

As for paying for membership, Brett has on many occasion rejected suggestions for a paid membership. He has though, set up a Paypal point for those who wish to donate to the Myswag cause.

I am one of the admins on a hunting forum with 5000ish members, the grumps tend to be cyclical, and we notice a definite increase in the cranky posts and squabbles over the summer months particularly........it just happens, doesnt mean the forum is going badly, and tends to ease off again.

We run commercial advertising from a number of wholsesalers and retailers, and each one gets their own sub forum for Q&A, quotes etc......it well and truly covers our running costs, and gives us capacity to run our own events, and sponsor prizes etc from the forums funds.

Great forum BTW, I am getting alot out of being here  8)

Thats some pretty fair points raised. Like I said, just a thought.
I didn't know about the server fund, i'll put some in next week.
I dont think there is anything wrong with this forum, hence why myself and lots of others spend time on here. I think that the idea of different levels of membership is interesting tho, i wonder how that would work?
