What Spreadsheet ?
« on: February 08, 2013, 10:24:44 AM »
Not sure if its a spreadsheet or some other format i need to use but i have my internet bible as i call it with all my usernames /passwords and login codes etc that i want to transfer to something appropriate then copy to my secure flash drive.Dont want the book in the vehicle on the upcoming trip to Tassie and thought this would be a better and much more secure idea. Can someone point out a format that would be appropriate to enter the information into.

Not sure if you have a smartphone but on my android I have an app called "aWallet" which stores all my logins etc. Is a freeby and works well. It can be customised a bit too.
Working in I.T. and having Oldtimers disease I find it invaluable. (now what was the password for xxxxDC1) It does have a password protect on it.
There are lots of apps out there for iphones & androids which do the same thing.
Works for me.

Bushbandit,

I use and recommend a free program called Keepass : http://keepass.info/ (NB - NOT .com)

It's a "password safe" program - you create a new database file that's encrypted and locked with your master password. Inside, you can store all your forum logons, your back account details, TFN - pretty much anything and everything you want access to. We use it at work to store system passwords as well as emergency contact details.

You can set it up with Dropbox (also free) to synchronise your database file across multiple computers and devices. I have it set up to synchronise my database file between my work and home PCs, as well as the phone and iPad. I've got a paid ($2, from memory) iPhone/iPad app called Kypass (https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/kypass/id425680960?mt=8)  on my iphone and ipad which works beautifully.

The end result is that if I'm travelling I've got easy access to all my personal info on either the phone, iPad or laptop. It's all secured and encrypted. Works really well. That's how I do it.

The other option would be to save your database file to a USB key as you've said - that would work too. Just a bit more manual than the automatic syncing option, and means that if you accidentally lose the USB then you're in deep trouble.

Happy to answer any other questions about it. I'm sure there's other options out there that are just as good (such as Noel's suggestion), this is just the one that I'm familiar with and have had great results with. Initially I was sceptical, but I wouldn't be without it now. Any option is going to be much, much better than carrying around the book like you do now.

Good luck,
Matto :)

Another way you could go, is to use your Google Drive account to store your spreadsheet on that.  That way, you only need to remember the one password  - for your google email account and then you can get into all the rest.

Just stick it on a word document and save it on your stick.

I save them all in the notes section of a "contact" in my phones memory. Easy to find for me and not so for anyone who may find the phone.

I  haven't used it myself yet, but I've heard good things about https://lastpass.com/.

It does more than store the passwords ... it offers single sign-on to many services. It will, I'm told, even create some really long, nasty passwords to use for such services - because you never actually need to type those nasty password in, you might as well have them as secure as possible.

Android, iOS and browser support.
