Camper is HERE....now what??
« on: December 15, 2012, 01:06:55 PM »
Ok - We have picked up our new HAWK camper yesterday and the 7 hour (usually 5 - bloody roadworks and wankers!!)trip home and set up by ourselves has gone much smoother than both of us ever expected!!! We've got a few questions so you all may get quite sick of us over the next week before we set off on our first adventure with our very own camper on the 21st!!!!  ;D Some may think our question are a bit stupid but please be patient with us  :-* as this is our first ever camper after years of hiring. First off the list is under the beds: who puts something over the wood under the mattress and what is it that you put there? In the cupboards, we have the non-slip matting, but do you keep your cups, plates etc on this or are they put into other containers for travelling? Also, the non-perishable foods...into a container or left just in the cupboard? Ok -- i'll wait until he who thinks is boss comes home and i'll ask what else we need to ask!!!

Welcome to the forum.  No silly questions on here, just plenty of friendly folks.

We glued some light marine carpet on the bed board as ours is an east west bed and we had about 300mm down each side of the bed which we store stuff on during the night.

We just carry our crockery and pots and pans in the cupboards with the non slip matting lining the shelves.  Seems to work OK for us so far.

We have a Drifta tucker box that stores most of our non-perishables.  Just lift it out of the CT at the end of a trip, use what we need to get rid of whilst at home, repack before the next trip.  Some stuff fits in the kitchen cupboards.

Look forward to reading of your travels

Add some insulation they use on houses.

Congrats on your purchase.  :cup:
D4D, is spot on with the insulation, if you can't get hold of any quickly use newspaper, about 5 or so layers will do the trick until you can get hold some proper stuff. It also comes in handy for starting a fire  ;D Use to use newspaper in the front of my jacket when I rode my motorbike in winter  ;D
Same as you, the non slip stuff, we have the metal plates/bowls and cups which get wrapped in tea towels and thrown in the cupboard. Same with the pots & pans and stuff.
Non perishable food is left in the green shopping bags and placed under the seats and in other cavities. You'll be surprised how much gear you can pack into them  >:D
Hope you shake down goes well, yeah, you'll have to post pics on your return.
Happy camping.

Our crockery is Corelle and goes under our sink with a small strip of non-slip stuff between each item and the area is lined with non-slip.  Cutlery is in our cutlery draw which is suspended at the top of the front section of the pantry.  Groceries go in the pantry (ours is a pull out draw) and anything extra will go in the bedside wells.
