How to determine price of second hand camper
« on: November 07, 2012, 06:06:15 PM »
Hi swaggers,

As title says, how do you determine the price of a second hand camper where manufacturer doesnt exist anymore.
is there a set of rules for depreciation? How do you determine the value of a product, unlike cars there doesn't seem to be a Redbook forbsecond hand campers.
how do you work out a price.?

Looking at buying second hand and trying to understand how a price of a camper is agreed. I guess unlike common jayco or other major manufacturer, you can view a lot and determine a guide price.
How does it work?

Appreciate some helpful replies.

Apologies in advance if its deemed a stupid question ............
Why do people ask "What the hell were you thinking?"
Obviously I was thinking I was going to get away with it and not have to explain it....

ill start the ball rolling.

I reckon 10% for first year,
5% per annum thence to year 5 or 6.
Thence stabilises subject to fair wear and tear. If its had hard use barter down.

Of course, this doesnt take into account "Fire Sales".  Find one of these and youre on a winner.

Just my opinion.

We bought second hand camper trailer this year. Just searched all the usual sites, eBay, campertrailers.org, trading post etc for the model I was looking for. Also read reviews when camper was new and what the new price was.
For us the price really came down to what we wanted in the trailer, how much we were willing to pay and the condition of each of the used campers and their extra features. Also talking to the seller gave an indication of how flexible they were on price.
Probably not very helpful but I think getting as much info about the model you are interested in will help give you an idea of what they are worth.
Good luck.

It's not a stupid question, I was taught many moons ago, If you don't ask, you'll never know.
Anyway, If you can't eye ball the camper and only have pictures and their word to go by, it is only worth what you are willing to pay for it.
As sellers we are all chasing top dollar for our item, as buys we don't want to pay more than we should or be ripped off.
Look at similar campers, Campers priced at the same dollar value.
What ever you are comfortable paying for it.

I just went thru this dilema with purchasing our CT.I was lucky i had met Terry from Jimboomba CTS a few years ago and new of his workmanship with alloy etc then while i was negoitiating a deal on a new one with extras i wanted the wife was looking at Gumtree and found a secondhand one  3yrs old and only used 3 times never off road .The pictures looked excellent but we still didnt know what to exspect as we had to travell 900kms to view.It was lucky that from the Jimboomba CT website i new the prices etc so i figured i was going to save $5000 on the CT so it would be worth the drive, but we were still apprehensive the whole trip and even the night before the viewing.Well next morn came and it was if it had just been outa the showroom ,deal done saved at least $5000 on new we are very happy it worked out for us.

not knowing its value wont matter.

I bought a 2nd hand MD one of ebay, knew it was selling new for x amount so placed my top price on it, (what I was prepared to pay)  if i got it sweet if not I'd keep looking but was a little worried as while it was cheap $3k + is alot of money to be spending on something unseen.

The moons where aligned it seems cos we're really happy however in hindsight I should have brought new as we are using it every other weekend and I cant see it lasting more than a couple of years, then again next time I know what I'm looking for so using it as a learning experience
