Jayco Camper Warning or simular.
« on: October 14, 2012, 12:15:39 AM »
Apparently its a know problem not mentioned till its happened to you. The under floor area of the Jayco's are mostly plywood, with galvanised inner guards. Unfortunately when a tyre lets go like a retread on a truck, the tyre slapping around will cause some serious damage. No I wasn't running retreads. Cooper ST's with over 10mm still on them. They let go at 100-110km/hr on highway. Van was packed very light as far as load goes as was only a weekend trip.
I would recommend installing a bash plate to prevent this happening to you.
I'm now looking for a recommended repairer in Sydney.
  • Buckled inner guard
  • Broken flare
  • ripped mud flap
  • Manhole in camper floor behind mudflap
  • rear panel cracked as tyre departed

When its time to let fly the tread will almost always leave a reminder of the event . Most important is that it dinged a few panals & didn't flip the CT or worse . Though its a very nasty suprise
You can go your own way . Treg Up & Make Dust

That wouldn't be a problem specific to Jayco.

May be wise to keep the 110km/hr part from your insurance company though.

It would happen to all vans is my guess.

Glad no one was hurt and your van only has minor damage.

Unless the trye had got a puncture and let go due to lack of air, i would suggest, the tyre has been coming apart for a little while now.

Now, having said that, i haven't checked mine either for any obvious out of roundness in the tread. Normally, when this occurs, you would pick up the problem early by running your hands over the tyre wouldn't be a waste of time
It shows use though, that a jack up and spin the wheel for a good visual is even more important.

Not real sure on the cause, their looking at it ATM.
The tyre has been fine, in last 24mths they've done around 10,000kms. Tyres get a pre-trip check before bolting them on at home for the trip and a look over when returning. Tyre was still up when I pulled over, however flat now. Was on return trip home from Wombeyan Caves.
Trailer handled it well, independent suspension helps.

That would have woken you up. Good thing as mentioned it didn't flip the trailer.

Hope you can get it repaired quickly and to a high quality. Let us know how you get on.

Cheers!
