Best Quality Campers under $10k
« on: September 20, 2012, 05:08:59 PM »
Gday fellow swaggers

We are currently in the market to purchase our first CT.  We really wanted a fully Australian built trailer but unfortunately our budget will not stretch that far  :'(.  The best package so far after various shows we have attended is the Skamper Camper Offroad Ranger from Aquabay Marine, Penrith.  We reside in NSW which seems to limit our choice.  We were hoping you fellow swaggers out there would be forthcoming with advice and recommendations regarding the Skamper and any other CT under the 10K.  We are also scoping out all the regular classifieds for that secondhand bargain i.e Customline  :cup:

Thanks in advance  ;D

We have a toptrail C/P and even though its Chinese we had no probs with it.  Quality was way better than a 2nd hand aussie one and well worth the money we paid.

if you don't mind a drive, go the cheaper range from Lifestyle a walkthrough camper is only $8950. Also the xtrail campers looked well put together for a very good price and both will deliver to your home and and both should beable to provide a camper for under $10000 delivered if you want.
here is the lifestyle   http://www.lifestylecampertrailers.com.au/model-details/?lct_model=lifestyle-walkthru

and here is the xtrail http://www.xtrailcampers.com/xtrail_camper_trailer_package_Xplorer_Offroad.php

The xtrail will cost abit more sorry but the trailer is solid and made in Oz

Market Direct Campers are a decent product for the money. Theres been alot of new improvements since the recruitment of Steve Robson too. I have owned one of their Offroad V2's and now own a T-box V3 and been impressed with both models. I wouldn't have upgraded with the same company if they were no good or I wasn't impressed with the original camper. For a brand new camper under the 10k mark MDC is deffinately a top contender...

Mate,

We'vejust done this over the last few months and after lots of realy good advice on here, we got a ripper for $6,000 with the works.

Have a look at our thread unsder camper trailer, BJ and the Bear.

Don't rush it, be prepared to walk away, get plenty of advice and good luck.

Ur, what is the quality of the tent like, does it need another tarp to make it water proof??? That was my only concern when
I looked at them at the show.

Fully Australian made/manufactured and under $10 000... MINE: http://myswag.org/forum/index.php?topic=23970.0  ;D

If you were after something bigger in a side-fold layout, I would be on the lookout for a Tambo. Although they have recently shut up shop, they would have to be the best value/quality trailer and you should get something only a couple of years old within your budget.

That was my mission a couple of months ago.. find decent full offroad camper under $10,000 and after much research decided that the best way to go was to be patient and look for a 2nd hand aussie built with aussie canvas. I ended up with an Outback Birdsville for $7000 in excellent hardly used condition. It needed a few things like brakes and 12v electrics but these were easy added within the $10k budget.
Looking at new, there are a few aussie built for under $10k but they are basic, so you can start with bare trailer/tent and add extras as you can afford. My camper brand new is about $9000 for basic trailer/tent. Customline are about the same and top quality.
If you are prepared to settle for imported then there is plenty out there. Brands I considered were GIC, Blue Tongue, Austrack, Oztrail, Skamper. These have some level of Australian built content, mostly in the trailer and with imported canvas but they do give you plenty of extras within the $10k budget, such as kitchen, water tank, annex, etc. I'd steer clear of chinese imports myself. Many people are happy with them but if you are thinking of outback or serious offroad use you really want something tough that you can trust is well built from quality materials. Good luck!

Tent is ok for an import job. The new campers been out the front yard now for 2.5 weeks being seasoned.
I've been hosing it down twice a day and we also copped a bit of rain in this time and theres been no leaks so far and no extra tarp. Would recommend the spreader pole kit for it though to help avoid pooling on the roof...

Keep watching those used classifieds and something will pop up Boris.....

Saw this the other day and it is in NSW:

http://www.campertrailers.org/camper_trader1094.htm

Also you could get a basic Off Road Deluxe Customline for $10K and then slowly add mods as you go.

We got ours for a tad under $13K just under 4 years ago and we ordered ours over the phone. After ringing Customline with an enquiry on their product they put us in touch with a recent customer close to where we live so we could view theirs before ordering ours......we ordered ours the same day as we were pretty impressed with the quality and value for money.   We got a fair few mods for that price and the website is good as you can add it up as you tick the boxes....good way to see what you can afford now and what to save up for.

http://www.customline.com.au/cms-models/deluxe-off-road.phps

Hope your search bears fruit either way and you get out there in a CT of some sort

We really appreciate all the information and advice so far from all the good folks here and we are continuing our research and options.

What we also didn't mention that makes a difference in which models we choose is that our tow vehicle is a Hyundai getz............ ;D

nah just jokes its a CRV 2.4LTR ULP (primary family car) with max tow  1200 and a Ford Courier 4WD 2.6LTR ULP with 1500 tow capacity.

We recently bought the Skamper Kamper Ranger model with 12ft tent. I am very happy with the whole unit. Towed extremely well on both sealed and unsealed roads on a recent trip to Tuncurry than onto Ellenbrough.
