Boilermaking apprenticeship

G'day all
I am considering a mature age apprenticeship as a boilermaker and would like to know from anyone in the trade how much i could expect to earn in the first year. I have a family so this will have a deciding factor. I understand there might be different rates of pay such as the mining industry.

Hi Brett

One of the fellas at work is an adult apprentice and he said he thinks its around the $9 per hour plus a loading for being an adult of about $150 a week. 

So maybe around the $500 per week mark.

Hi Brett, 

My son is having an interview tomorrow for a boilermaker apprenticeship with a mine. From what we've heard, the pay rate is about $17 an hour. That hasn't been confirmed though - just a bit of info from others in the game.

Most that I have worked with have been on the minimum adult wage or similar rates to a laborer

Thanks to all who replied. I made some calls today to a recruitment firm but they couldn't give an exact amount as most companies pay different although a rough idea was $14 an hour.

Lost: your link was most helpful trying to decide.
I have decided to apply for a position so fingers crossed.

Well done with starting fresh at an older age, tough decision.

Will be a bit tight for the first years, especially with family etc, but worthwhile in the end.

I'm starting a new career, I just havent found what i want to do yet and what I have aplied for, I have no such luck with. Stick it out,

I wish I had gained something I can crossover easily to suit the ever changing times, 20 years ago.
My field is more specialised and theres less and less jobs and more more and more applicants, and wages are down. My last position I took a 25% pay drop.
Starting a new career wasnt a big decision. Ive been struggling with finding a good role, looked at going back to my old role and not a hope in hell of a chance of a job there.

In 2009, I started an Electrical Distribution Lineworker apprenticeship.  I will be 43 when I graduate at the end of year.  The first year was tight, second year on was easier, as we were allowed to work OT.  The worst was the mathematics at TAFE.  All worth it now.

Brett - good luck mate. If you dont mind me asking what were you doing before?

You guys are giving me something to think about. I have resigned from my job and leave at the end of the year, I have had enough of psychology and would love to do something completely different. I will be travelling for a while but will need to find something more permanent eventually. Are there many opportunities out there for mature age apprenticeships?

I have a trade in roof tiling which I did for about 14 years. During that time I also worked at a bottle shop worked my way to manager which I enjoy but time for a change. I like playing with metal so boilermaker would be great. If you want to do a trade look at recruitment firms as they give great support. I turn 41 in February so never to old. I have been told a mature age will earn more than a school leaver but all employers are different.

Thanks Brett. People that I know are going to think I am crazy going from Psychologist to a trade apprenticeship (pardon the pun  ). Owning 2 land rovers though I have started to really enjoy working on my own cars  , so the move to something where I am using my hands a bit more sounds good to me, even though the pay will be a bit rough at first.
