Getting disillusioned with advertisements
« on: August 26, 2012, 12:25:06 PM »
<rant>
I understand people want to get the best price for their CT, but do they really expect a buyer to not notice really obvious damage that they failed to mention in the ad?

I just wasted half a day, and a heap of diesel, driving all the way down the Mornington Peninsula to inspect, and almost certainly buy, a CT that turned out to have a significant crack all the way through the pillar between the kitchen and the fridge carrier.

Did he really expect me not to notice it?

Did he really expect that such damage wouldn't impact on my decision to buy it?

Bloody hell, people.... I don't expect the ad to mention every scatch or ding, but I do expect to be told about that sort of damage either in the ad or on the phone before I come over for a look.... particularly when the look involves that sort of travel.

Yeah know the feeling mate, a cub I looked at earlier this year had to have the shock absorbers welded back on after they had broken off, but lucky for me I had posted up the details of the camper before I saw it and a member from Qld recognized it and warned me, nothing in the add about the damage but when I asked him about it he was up front and said yes it had been repaired ( but not very well)
Just ask for lots of pics and hope

I feel sorry for the bloke who does buy it.... Three poorly bucked rivets is all that stands between the fridge and the road....

yeah that is poor form... and it's little different to all the 'immaculate, full service history' cars out there...

Could you offer, say, $500 less and get it fixed?

We looked at one advertised as "hardly used tent almost new" went out to have a look got the guy to open it up so i could check it out and it had mold all over the roof...

Some people just dont care and only want the money, we look at about 20+ campers second hand and brand new and the one we ended up with was perfect for our price range and had minimal wear on it.

Seen a few where diy mods were done with no rust protection done till after it had set it :S they are normally painted up just before they go on sale lol.

I decided to buy new from the factory..
VERY happy, and I have a warranty as well...
Not only that I got to spec the camper exactly as I wanted it - options I wanted, and matching hubs/wheels to my LC200...

Happy Camper!

I was going to make a comment that maybe the seller was ignorant and did not know the issue existed ...... Except for the obvious primer touch up highlighting the area.

Judging by the surface rust, and crappy looking condition,. Im betting the price indicated the condition though.. It wouldnt have been 15,000

I will be buying a camper soon and have been watching the second hand advertisments.

Our must have in a camper is a staircase, we do not want a ladder for various reasons.

I know the staircase option has not been around long for many manufacturers, but I have noticed a trend amond the staircase campers for sale - putting them on for the around the same price (sometimes more) than what I can buy the same camper new for.

I realise people have done upgrades, but some of these 'upgrades' may only be a few extra lights or udgrade of the mattress.

If I can buy the same camper brand new with warranty for only $1000 more, then that is what I am going to do.

we spent 12 months looking for a second hand camper and have seen many in really bad condition, most of the time the seller just pleads ignorance.

We ended up bitting the bullet and buying a new CT. At least we get a warranty if anyting goes wrong.

Hey that's great! Watch for cracks...
Hopefully not!
I'm not aware of Ulti's developing cracks - at least I haven't seen any reported over on the Ulti owners forum or speaking with other Ulti owners, and they do get to some incredible off road locations.

There's around 1150 (elites and former variants)' and 170 XTRK's around over some 15 years as I understand it, and they have been developed for true off-road use, so a proven platform which was one of the underlying drivers to my decision to go Ultimate.  That said, everything is 'breakable' I guess!

The pre-loved camper world is no different to other pre-loved vehicles I suppose - buyer beware...

You expect honesty DiverBob...in this day & age PMSL

Currently looking for a car for my son.
I've told/warned him to not even contemplate anything outside a 50k radious - which makes choices a bit hard considering where we live.
I refuse to spend quality time travelling to look at what will no doubt turn out to be crap, despite the owner trying to assure me his bomb dunny-door is the bargin of the century!   ::)

The overall condition of the unit wasn't too bad... It just needed new bearings and that sort of stuff.... And then I saw that crack and the attempt to fix and hide it.

I've never seen or heard of a Bush Boss cracking there before, so I don't think it's a common fault.

The asking price was 13k, which I thought was fair for the overall condition. I spoke to Southern Cross about the cost to make good the crack, and offered to buy the unit, less the cost of the repairs... I was told to "piss off"... No exaggeration... I got a two word SMS in reply to my offer.... "piss off".

So this one? http://www.tradingpost.com.au/Automotive/Caravans/AdNumber=TP005066607

Roughly how much were the repairs?

The only other 3 of same make/model I see are $16k and 1x 18k and an old ad (from 2008) for another 2006 for 19k (http://www.exploroz.com/Classifieds/Campers_Trailers.aspx?s=NSW&id=7748)....

Comparing its price with others of same make and model it could be/sounds reasonably cheap - if the condition is as good as you say.

I'm reluctant to identify the actual unit.... but it was fair at 13k, not a bargain.

The seller explained that the crack was the result of the unit going astray and hitting the deck while being towed by a tractor down a gutter.... I don't see that, myself, because I couldn't find an impact point on the underside.

SC advised that it would cost about 4k To have the front box cut off and replaced.

Welding isn't really a viable option for a permanent fix given the location of the crack, and the powder coat finnish of the unit. I also think the previous repair weld's failure indicates that another repair weld is unlikely to hold.

Even if a weld did hold, that doesn't address the twisted hinges and the rust resulting from the front box no longer being watertight.

The 'brochure ' pictures would have been first sign. Few actual real life photos.

Given the piss off attitude, move on with life.

You'll laugh soon when a better model, cheaper and closer to home comes along.
he'll still be trying to sell.
Why do people ask "What the hell were you thinking?"
Obviously I was thinking I was going to get away with it and not have to explain it....

Good advice... It wasn't my intention to harp on about this unit, but that I was growing disolusioned with ads and sellers who are loose with the truth.

Someone has to have a decent second hand unit for 10-15k.
