DVD's on Northern Aus

 :D Hi All.  Been trying to get a visual on a trip we're planning for next year, just to get a look at the water crossings a general road condition, as well as some scenic locations etc.  So went out and bought ( stupid I know) a couple of a TV 4x4 hosts DVDs from local ARB.... what a waste, 85% commercial adds....  and a couple of snippets of 1 or 2 places, and more general how to drive.....

So was wondering, has anyone seen a generally good DVD for Cairns to West Coast, via Hell's gate, Roper Bar, Gibb.  Adds acceptable, just not 85% of DVD.

I have the full set of bush tucker man dvd's they are always good for a bit of note taking and research on interesting places.

Can I suggest heading to your local library?  Mine has a database online, where I can browse for titles and book them and they email me for collection at the library of my choice.  Best thing about a big city.   ;D

The trouble is what ever you watch regarding the roads will have changed. But the scenery is spectacular...

Try some of the Leylands DVD's made by Mike and Marg Leyland....and pick them up quite cheaply at places like Big W.  Although the DVDs were made some time ago they are still inspiring with suggestions of places to see etc.  Also tells you how many ks they did and how much fuel was used for each section.  Tracks may have changed a bit etc good info still applies.
There is also a DVD available from the ABC shop I think by Tim Flannery and John ??? - two men across the top or similar title.  Trip from Cairns to Broome.

Agree. Anything over 5yrs old is well out of date.
Our club library has plenty of movies, but most are old school now. But many of the destinations are still the same (EG: Marree etc)., just how you get there is different.

There would be a good little earner for someone who could go out and do a fresh sort of 'leyland bros' type doco's...

There are very little in the way of modern decent ones.

Love my Bush Tuckerman movies.. kids sometimes watch em and get all keen to go remote travelling :(

Me too, aren't they great. Still remember watching them 20 years ago wishing that one day I would get to see where he went and last year I had dinner with him or really it was APT but he was there - he certainly has an opinion...Anyway a great watch indeed. Another option wold be Malcolm Douglas ,maybe?

Great for a laugh and amazing where they take those vans.  The Toyota's do a good job too.

Search them on YouTube, some of their trips are online

Gotta love Les Hiddins and Malcolm Douglas (RIP). Shows alot of us are getting on so lets all quit work and tour this great land of ours. I wish, lol :police:

Speaking as someone who has a little bush knowlege, I would be using any DVD as a very basic guide only.  Road and environmental conditions are never the sme two seasons in a row.  I constantly travel through the Tanami, and even this year it has already changed so many times it is ridiculous.  That is for good reasons this year, given a lot of road plant is out there doing a lot of maintenance and repairs.
