cable and winding system replacement on Jayco
« on: April 21, 2012, 03:42:50 PM »
Can anyone give me a guesstimate on how much it would cost to replace the cable and winding system on a Jayco Dove circa 1980's?

Would also like to know what tyre pressure I need on my camper. I have 175 R13's and total load of up to 700kgs. Thanks!  ???

Depending on what brand and how rigid the sidewalls are, I would run around 45-50 psi.

I used to run 40 to 45 psi in my old jayco depending on load.
The roof cables wouldn't be too hard to replace, but I would think it would be a fiddly time consuming job. I'd probably start with jayco for a price then some caravan repairers. Why are you looking at replacing the whole system?

Don't use S/S cable to replace as it work hardens.

Thanks Singo for your input. I have been running 40 psi and thought I could put more in as the load gets heavier.
With the winding and cable system, the service guy said it was on its way out. The winder is quite loose in the connection when I use it, but not sure about the rest of the system. Will read Hairs post and at least have some knowledge to fall back on when it goes in for a service. :-)

An update on price for winding system replacement. The quote from my serviceman came in at 400-500. Something to ponder on...and maybe another couple of quotes! I should really look at having a giant BBQ...followed by a working bee! ;-)
