What happened to that wrecked ultimate?
« on: April 17, 2012, 09:25:06 PM »
I remember seeing two wrecked ultimates on here, one was an ebay link to one that was pretty much done for and the other was to someone who had bought one that had more of a light roll that they were looking at repairing.  I have found the discussion about the ebay one but can't find the one being rebuilt - maybe it wasn't here.  Does anyone know where it is?

The room underneath is big enough for 2 sets of oztrail bunks if you wanted (so 4 kids). For your two, I'd probably recommend putting the 3 girls up on the big bed and you sleeping on the (king single sized) lounge converted to a bed. Not that you need a long bed :)

That way you could use the under bed room as a play room for the girls during the day

If you bought the annex walls (we haven't) you'd have a huge area under canvas.

We went and had a look today and the final verdict is we won't be getting one.  Anyone want to float me some cash for a new camper to hit thehuge market gap between wind up campers and hard floors?

The ultimate is a very nice unit and well finished but with a little more forethought they could make it so that it sleeps two doubles without using the lounge area. Seriously who needs a bed that big and why should half the family have to sleep out on the ground?

It may end up a bit longer but that would make room for an external slde out kitchen - WHAT you can tick all the boxes that easily??  There is a phenominially large gap in the market at the moment and I can not believe that with all the camper trailer manufacturers out there none have found it.  I have the design, now who has the money

We're also a family of four. We top and tail the kids (2yo and 5yo) on the internal single bed.

Unfortunately none of them are ideal for a family and tick all of the boxes. We have a KK and it has features that we absolutely love, like the rugged go anywhere build, the kitchen, ease of set up/pack up, storage, ability to Carry our boat etc etc. However it falls a long way short of being the ultimate family camper when it comes to sleeping arrangements. I have 3 and 7 year old girls. At the moment they sleep in a double swag together inside on the hard floor. This works well at the moment (while they are happy to share) and leaves enough floor space to walk in and out of the door.

Previously we had a trak shak, which was awesome for the family as far as room under canvas and sleeping arrangements were concerned (2 x queen beds + room for one more), however the kitchen, set up and pack up were a major PITA compared to the KK. The kitchen had to be set up, then you had to connect the gas, water etc to it and it was small and unstable when set up off the camper. And try pcking all that canvas up wet, not fun.

For us the ease of the KK won and suits our needs better (still not much fun when its raining as there isn't much room for the kids to play) and is a pleasure to use, but the sleeping accommodation is not ideal. I have resisted getting the additional kids rooms etc because it all adds to pack up and set times and for us simple is best.

For me the ultimate camper for my needs would be a KK trailer, chassis and kitchen with a Trak Shak type tent box on top so you had the best of both worlds, a kitchen on wheels that was ready to go and a large living area for  family.

KK you listening??

Regards

Jas

Burnsy have you thought about a Camprite?
We are a family of 5 and we hunted around for ages looking for the "ultimate" camper.
We had a look over one (Ultimate) when we were at ELQ last year (only after the owner had used up the charge in his DustBuster to clean the outside before opening it up ???  ) and liked what we saw... except we couldn't fit the kids in!
We ended up flying down to the camping show in Perth to have a good look and we kept going back to the Camprite. Surprisingly roomy, built like a tank, fits 4 kids with bunks (6 if they're small enough to top and tail), and all off the ground.
