Fraser Island - Cathedral Beach - Recent Feedback / Reviews
« on: April 16, 2012, 10:11:24 AM »
In the early planning for a return trip to Fraser Island, probably for a week in December.

In September 2011 we had a day trip and dropped into Fraser’s on Cathedral to have a look around as a potential civilised campground.

Fantastic spot and nice and central perfect for a base for a week. However we were disapointed with the condition,  was fairly ordinary with rotting on-site tents and filthy and poorly maintained amenities blocks.

After a bit of googling it looks like there has been a change of management and is no longer part of the Big 4 chain.

Has anyone been or stayed there this year that can comment if there has been any renovation or improvements.

Cheers

GS

Hi GS, we are booked in for the first week of July. I'll post some pics and trip report when we return.  I think you are right about new ownership.  Larry is the resident manager and is a terrific bloke, the previous owners (the Fraser Is Company) ran into some liquidity issues with the drop in tourism 2-3 years ago. We have stayed there 8 or 9 times and find it a good place to fish and use as a base camp while on Fraser.

GS,

I believe the place was in receivership. I have not heard about it selling as yet. If it is poorly maintained at present that will be why.

All the same as last year. They seem to run the place alot better. Rountine cleaning, rubbish removal. The camp kitchen area has had a bit of a touch up. Newer gas BBQs. Other than that it all seems the same. They shop stays open a little bit longer as well.
They are also advertising for a caretaker/couple to run a place.

Thanks all for the feedback so far.

Tossing up between camping at Cathedral Beach, Dundaburra or Dilli Village.

Have stayed in a tent at Dundaburra a couple of times prior to kids, that was about 9 years ago.

I have seen enough comments on Myswag about Dilli Village that seem to tick most of the boxes however is a little further south than was planning. We are not hard and fast on that though.

Prerequisite is flush toilets and hot showers.

Am hoping to add Maxtracks and solar prior to the trip.

Cheers
