A fresh tsunami warning has been issued after a strong 8.2-magnitude aftershock rattled the same area.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the aftershock struck at 8.43pm 615 kilometres from Banda Aceh.

This follows expert advice that the first tremor had been horizontal, rather than vertical, and that a tsunami was unlikely

Southeast Asian nations had earlier issued tsunami alerts and urged people to move to safety away from coastlines after a massive 8.6 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia's Sumatra.

Sri Lanka, India, Thailand and Malaysia issued evacuation instructions as US monitors issued an Indian Ocean-wide tsunami watch after the quake, which according to the USGS struck off the coast of Sumatra at 2.38pm (6.38 AEST) at a depth of 22 kilometres.

USGS had initially reported it as an 8.9-magnitude quake.

Shit!

Really?

Your right, mother nature is pissed. Maybe we should stop raping her and abusing her.

Give something back to our one and only earth.
Why do people ask "What the hell were you thinking?"
Obviously I was thinking I was going to get away with it and not have to explain it....

Breaking news............ seems all ok.
Not like 2004 boxing day.....   thankfulky.

My thoughts go out to Nihal and his family, who made us so welcome, from Galle in Sri Lanka
Who lost family in 2004 disaster.

The fact is that it was tectonic plate movements, which cause earthquakes, that formed the lands on this planet as we know them.  I feel terrible that people suffer as they do, but nature is a force that we cannot control and never will be able to.

My  brother lives in Thailand...he said there is a lot of panic this time but no waves...they have felt a few tremors but nothing to much.
Hopefully stays that way as last time was a nightmare trying to find out if he was ok or not.

Earthquakes (and consequently tsunamai) are a natural part of the the evolving condition of this planet. Whilst man has made plenty of changes to this planet, and some have caused minor tremors. Very few, if any, life threatening earthquakes have been "caused" as a direct influence of human interaction.

The fact that humans have inhabited (and continue to inhabit) geological "hotspots" means that we are more and more likely to see injury and loss of life. The geological record shows us that major quakes, volcanos and other tectonic related activities have occured in the past. And it is only a matter of time before it happens again.
