The only time we have problems out here with them is when we're in the shed (surrounded by tin) or in the mountains that seem to have a mineral that disrupts the radio signal.

The shed acts as a type of Fardays cage (or shield) , you can read more here ... [urlhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faraday_cage[/url] And I should also stipulate that certain frequencies are more susceptible to terrain and atmospheric conditions than others...

I know that our RFS trucks don't have massive aerials, rather they have small ones mounted above the cab. The only time we have problems out here with them is when we're in the shed (surrounded by tin) or in the mountains that seem to have a mineral that disrupts the radio signal. Otherwise, they seem to do quite well with rather small looking aerials.

Yes but the bulk of your RFS communication would be via a repeater wouldn't it?  So that isn't an apples and apples comparison.

Chippy, no problem with what you have said.  I think we are pretty much saying the same thing anyway.

I've used Icom, Uniden and GME and all are good and will last if treated with a modicum of care. Ther RFS uses VHF dont they?? It is not conmparable to UHF 477mhz CB. If we wanted best antenna performance, we'd all be drilling holes in the middle of our roofes and stripping headlinings out to put our aerialsin the middle of the roof.

My concern with the Oricom would be how robust it is going to be? If you are going to really rough terrain id be thinking twice, in case it lets you down.

I have Icom, Tait, in the Lux and have had Kenwood, Yaesu, Phiilps and dare I say it, even a Motorola for as while!. My advice would be buy the best you can afford. The $199 with elevated feed aerial is cheap!!. It might last 10 years or 10 minutes. Here's hoping for the former!!
