4x4 Maps for tour around Australia
« on: January 19, 2012, 09:09:43 PM »
Hi All

We are planning a trip around Oz in June 2013 for 6 months.  Need to start getting a bit of a mud map organised so I can plan ahead. (I'm one of these types that likes to have a Plan A, B, C, D etc).

Would like the maps to include some 4x4 tracks etc so I can test the RIG.  Are the DVD maps that available worth it?  While I work in IT, I still like the old map laid out on the bonnet trick.  ;-)

What maps would you recommend and where would you buy them?

Thanks Heaps

Your on an island , turn to the lelt or right & keep doing this till you see where you left from another direction . Camps 5 or 6 will get you around & provide a camping guide as you go . Well worth the investment . Cover all Aus Have fun

We used (use) Hema Paper Maps, we pick them up from Roadhouses, newsagents etc as we were in the areas.

We have camps 6 and I reckon its only any good if your sticking to the main roads. No good for getting off the beaten track.

I use the Hema map of Australia, when I get to areas that require some desolate and out of the way traveling I always ask the locals, as they will know any new roads and what the condition of the roads are.
Remember the map would have been printed the previous year and weather will quickly change the road condition :'(

( I bought mine from a fishing gear shop $24 )

Enjoy your trip  :cup:

OziExplorer

http://www.oziexplorer.com/

X2,
We used Ozi on laptop on our last trip, planned most places we wanted to go using Google maps before hand, then used Ozi for the back road stuff.
Used wireless in the place were we could to double check routes or places we want to go with Google, when we had no reception we used Ozi.
I haven't tried it yet, but read you can save Google maps as a certain file type then import it in to ozi as way points or something.
I'll have to look more into this when I get home.

We also have one of those truckie map books that we track our trip with

Thanks everyonefir your responses.  Appreciate them. I'll check out the different sites suggested and  the hema maps as well, they certainly seem popular.

So for a bit of 4x4g sounds like we need to talk to the locals. I dont intend to go crazy and we are not the mud slinging go super hard type. Just after a little adventure.  8)

I use a combination.  I have OziExplorer on my laptop with 250k maps, plus all of the Hema ones.

Then I have the Camps Wide book.

Thirdly I carry the Hema paperbased maps as I really find it easier to use them whilst on the road - the laptop is for photo storage, files, and maps if I need them - they are my back-up.

Fourthly I've brought a few books over the years for various areas.  For example in Tasmania I used a 4WD book from Chris Boden which I found brilliant.

And lastly whilst on the road I (now) have the Hema Navigator.  It is expensive and it isn't the best off-road GPS, nor the best on-road GPS.  But I believe it's the best 'all-rounder' at the moment.  There is nothing nicer than accessing the Camps 6 part of the GPS when you're travelling to have all of the options shown on a screen in front of you.  Basically it makes life easier - which I like when camping.

I use all of them (well bar the Hema Navigator) when I'm planning a trip.  I then carry all of them as plans change......

Cheers
